Everygame is overhyped..
Otogi wasn't, Beyond Good and Evil wasn't, all sorts of great games weren't overhyped.
Even recent games had very little hype, take Ninja Blade for example (flawed but fun, imo), that was definitely not hyped.

There does seem to be a great deal of hype around big releases these days though, kind of ridiculous. Don't particularly think that the consoles are being worse than the PCs though.
And MW2 tops everything in terms of hype.

how about some reverse hype?

GoldenEye on the N64 sucks... there, i said it.

..........................................................

Console Shooters have nothing on PC's and our Mouse/keyboard combination, or else PC gamers would all use game pads to play

Also, halo sucks. if you disagree, get a PC and play any above average shooter released in the last decade. Deus Ex, perhaps?
I disagree, and I am better with a controller than a mouse.
And I have Half-Life 2 for the PC...
*goes and cries in a corner, clutching her ridiculously large 1st gen Xbox Controller*

Really, though, I don't *resists yelling profanity angrily at the internet*
...
Sorry, I'm really sick of people trying to invalidate my opinions. I know you're not trying to annoy me or anything, its just...
I have more fun with consoles, so no matter how much technically "better" PC gaming is, in my case it is not as competent in the most important factor of gaming: Entertainment.

Here's one for the PC gamers to discuss. What is the most overblown, overhyped console game in your opinion, and the PC title that out does it?

For me it was Halo 2. The game that blew it out of the water? Unreal Tournament 2004. It was faster, more violent, and the fights were much more intense. The vehicles were alot more fun and the various game modes gave it alot more variety. On the multiplayer side, it was just as fun with friends as Halo 2, however, the bots were fantasitic and the enemy AI was downright scary at times. Not to mention the modding support later on. True, you couldn't play it on a tv in the dorm, but the PC control set up gave you much better control over your character and it made for some crazy moves in the fights.

True Halo had a storyline, but to be frank, if I want a good storyline I'll go to folks who can actually write them like Bioware. At least they know how to end their games properly.
Here's an unorthodox thought:
What if we all stopped complaining and took the time to appreciate what we have?
...
Sorry, I'm out of line, aren't I?

Not bad, though explaining why would be nice. Or if you mention a PC title that comes to mind explaining why you thought it beat the overhyped game.

And as mentioned, please no extreme flaming. I picked Console titles since they seem to get the lion's share of the hype machine these days. Though if you have an overhyped PC game to throw out there *coughsporecough* that'd probably be ok too. ^_^
So you can flame Halo to death but we can't flame anything? It just sounds like you're a PC elitist that's all.

How about you suggest another CONSOLE game that beat an over hyped console game... in your opinion Halo is popular for a reason, and I'm sure unreal tournament is as well. Just because you thought one was better than the other doesn't mean Halo was bad.

As for hype, all major releases are overhyped these days. Hell, look at MW 2, something I consider to be a completely average game in most regards and everyone's flipping out about it.

From a PC perspective every console game is overhyped. Why? Because they are more popular.
And there's the night's moment of enlightened clarity. Well put.

Well, what I was trying to say is that it's all about the manner in which you criticise something rather than just flaming it. Also the thread really isn't console vs console, though I don't see why you couldn't go that route as well if done properly. Basically, it comes down to this. If you just say "blank sucks" then you're at risk for flaming and causing some conflict. But if you explain why you didn't like it or why you like this other title more, then it's more like criticism.

The format I was going for was mention a game you thought was WAY overhyped, and then something that came along at the same time that was underhyped but was frankly, a better game. So you could mention a console game in that manner and then counter with another game of the same type that was underhyped and which blew it out of the water.
I chose Halo for my overhyped pick, as I've played every damned halo game so far and each was preceeded by a wave of hype greater then that of the y2k bug. But then after beating each game I allways got the feeling that the game I'd just played had been done better by another company. Not that Halo is bad, but that there are much better games that were not as hyped as it was.

Personally I agree with you on Modern Warfare 2 (I thought the same about 1). If you want to stand up for the console side then throw us a console game you thought was not as overhyped as MW2 but was still alot better than it.

Well, it's really an opinion though, so it doesn't count for much. I personally feel that every Halo game has deserved the hype it's gotten because I've thoroughly enjoyed them all. They're not the most amazing games on the planet, but they're good... and they've never been marketed as the greatest game of all time. Look at the marketing for ODST... very well done and got the point across.

Modern Warfare 2's marketing had it pegged as GOTY before it even came out, and in many people's opinions a game has to be unique and different to even contend for that. I felt that Borderlands didn't get much hype at all but I've loved it (it hasn't left my console since I bought it).

I suppose my point... is that everything is hyped nowadays... it's the same as the general trend towards rating all games higher and higher... how many games are hitting 80's and 90's on stuff like metacritic? You can't go by hype anymore.

I think your post is stating two things:

1. PC game hype pales in comparison to console hype.
2. PC games are better.

I didn't have a problem with the first point, but why did you have to specify that users should give examples where a PC game beat a hyped console game? I don't understand the purpose of that. Everyone has their own opinions. I am not a PC gamer, but I can recognize that most PC games are of a higher quality anyways, but this post just struck me as being a little elitist.

If you want to discuss the contrast in hype between PC games and console games that would make for a better thread I think.

Duke Nukem Forever

Unless Jesus descends from heaven and hand delivers it to my door, there is absolutely no way it will ever live up to the hype.

Well, to be fair, Infinity Ward engaged in unholy and demonic acts of evvvvil with the PC version's multiplayer. Primarily, I suspect, because they simply don't want to release on PC anymore whereas Activison wants to get every last penny from it.

Seriously dude, don't even bother.

You don't have to tell me UT2K4 was better. I still play it. Also I think the Hellbringer was at least 5x cooler than the Warthog, but no one really cared because the game was too hard for them.

Many good points there. For a start, I would absolutely agree that it's all about opinion. That's really all there is. Thanks to the downfall/curruption of gaming journalism as a whole you usually can't trust a single review and even when you can it still comes down to someone's opinion.

You were also right about the 2 things my post was stating, but not quite.

1. Yes, PC game hype pales in comparison to console hype. This is mainly due to there being more money on the console side so the companies are willing to dish out alot more in order to get the press/hype engines going. It's just the way of things. When it's the other way it's the same thing. Look at the World of Warcraft adds and the hype around the Lich King expansion, an add-on that only top level characters could use.

2. Yes, I am a PC elitist. I also own every console currently out (except the psp go, I ain't touching that piece of crap). I've been playing since my dad brought home the NES Power Set bundle and haven't stopped since. Some genres are just better on the PC and some kick ass on consoles. Mario sucks on a PC, same for Street Fighter and any racing game, not to mention platformer adventure games. Both are good.

Since the console hype seems to outweigh the PC hype at the moment, I thought that would be a good place to start this thread. Though what we've seen is that it's more fun to mention the hype on both sides of the fence. As a console gamer I grow more and more dissipointed. Every Final Fantasy game is the same damn thing over and over again and each time it's hyped as the greatest gaming experience ever, when none of them since 7 could even hold a candle up to games like Chrono Trigger or Earthbound.

Plus overhyped games suck more.
They do and here's why. Because the hype makes each of them seem like the greatest games ever. But they often aren't. They're usually just OK. Not amazing, not garbage, but ok. However if you're expecting "Damn Fine" and you get "Ok" it can make "Ok" look like "Crap".

As for your final comment. Dude, then make the thread and I'll post there as well. Or post here but do exactly what you're talking about. Its a discussion so lets discuss. ^_^

I don't really have an explanation for my abandonment of PC gaming... I suppose it's because I can now play console games with my friends without having to be at their house? I also think buying a nice TV had a lot to do with it as I just don't want to hook my PC up to the TV to game on, though Diablo III may persuade me to do just that.

I'll agree that the money seems to be in the hands of consoles now. They are proving to be the most popular platform for gaming, though many genres, like RTS and RPG just work better on PC. I personally feel FPS and platformers work better on the console though.

Ultimately, the PC as a platform will provide the best of everything. Best graphics, best community, best support, etc... but some people, like me, just enjoy the simplicity of console gaming over PC gaming.

As for the hype, I find I'm most often drawn to the games that don't have a lot of hype to begin with. Granted, ODST had a few commercials, some promos and such, but it wasn't one of the highest reviewed titles and many criticized it for including stuff you already had if you got Halo 3 and all the DLC. I didn't buy it, I just rented it to try out the campaign, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

When it comes to hype, you can shelter yourself from it somewhat, but I think most people will have already made up their minds on a game long before the hype hits. Look at all the pre-orders for Modern Warfare 2....

Hmm, an interesting question.

I'd say that there are tons of over-hyped games both for PCs and Consoles (we won't discuss Macs). To keep things level headed I found that Gears of War and its ilk have gotten lots of attention, but in my mind it didn't really live up to it. Sorry for not liking it. However, the PC has its own over hype, this being mostly present in the release of Halo 2. For all its claims to grandeur and "killer app" status, it really was just a two year old port with not much graphical improvement or anything else. Again my apologies to the Halo fans out there, I mean no offense.

I suppose the point is that over hype exists in all aspects of the games industry. Hell, it's human nature after all. Am I right?

Modern Warfare 2. I can name quite a few shooters on PC and console that are alot better than the game that targets the same type of people who loved Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.
