I know what you mean OP, had the same experience with Arkham Asylum. Maybe it's top for consoles, but as a pc gamer I found it boring and lackluster.

But the game that really springs to mind in this case was Halo2.. I played the first Halo and it was alright, not incredible like boasted, but at least it kept me interested enough to finish it. Not Halo 2. I ditched that game after the first hour, that's how bad it bored me. I literally went back an played Quake 2 the same day and had a lot more fun with it.

I didn't like Arkharm asylum, I wasn't interested in Batman before, someone told me it's a good game if you weren't even interested in Batman, but I still didn't enjoy it.

True Crime: Streets of L.A.

Good god, what a crap storm that was. It was a fully realized and modeled copy of the city of L.A., with nothing to do in it (sort of like Mafia II). I gave up on that game after a getting into a dozen fights with hobos, only to learn that each and every one of them was a third degree black belt. Terribly broken mechanics, disposable story, empty sandbox.
THIS! And oh my god how I looked forward to that game. When it came out it felt like it pissed on my soul for ever wanting it.

OT:
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Deus Ex
World of Warcraft (and not because I hate mmo's, I have a solid 2,5k hours invested in Guild Wars. WoW was just boring to me, however, it did lead me to buy gw, so I guess it's excused.)
Gears Of War
Black Ops
Mafia 2
The Movies (I was really looking forward to this game, but why doesn't ANYONE want to work in my studio? I have to use janitors as extras and extras as builders and builders as stuntmen and stuntmen as entourage and entourage as film crew and film crew as janitors.)
Resident Evil 4.
Spore (of course)
Dead Space
Ocarina of Time

The Witcher 2. Jesus, is sucking up to butthurt Baldur's Gate fans all a game need to do? The sad part is it's actually a decent game hidden under a humongous pile of baffling design mistakes.

Pokemon Black and White. Quite possibly the first installment in the franchise that didn't out do its previous (or a remake, for that matter). I get that there are people who enjoy the franchise and will swallow any scrap of meat that Gamefreak throws at them, but you still need to demand better.

I'm waiting for the Ruby and Sapphire remakes.
thats the most hilariously ironic thing i've read in a while.

'b&w were shit, didn't out do the previous games cause they were unoriginal pandering! I can't wait for the remake of the pokemon game that came out three years ago.'

seriously? your brain didn't convulse the slightest bit when you typed that out?
I didn't say they were shit, or else I would have stopped playing them on day one. All I am saying is that compared to the most recent installments (D/P/Plt and HG/SS), they really dropped the ball that prevented them from making this a great title, instead just barely making it good.

The touch interface from HG/SS is taken away for the C-Gear (I don't know why they couldn't just make a face button switch between the C-Gear and touch interface), the Pokemon animations are fair at best, but the moving pixels don't make the Pokemon look good or as clear as in previous installments, the new level-up system forces you to train in other areas instead of staying in one favorable area, and most of the new batch of Pokemon are forgettable and uninspiring.

So if you like these new installments, fine, whatever. All I am saying is that there are better installments out there.

Aion also hits top of my list... that people coudn't see this as a failure before launch was beyond me, and I had a free entry to the game but could not see why I would play it over other games.

World of Warcraft for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the medieval fantasy genre, and when the game came out I gave it a try for like... 10 levels but after that it really didn't grab my attention, nor make me enthusiastic to play the thing. I even tried it on several different character archetypes, but none of it even made me the least bit interested.
=-.-=
After that, I uninstalled it from my hard drive, set the disks back into their case, put the case on the shelf, and haven't touched it again.

ung... I just stopped reading after the first two sentences.
Which is funny because the third sentence partially agrees with what you said.

Listen people, there are certain factors inherent to gaming that can be determined with a basic understanding of the development process, as well as looking at previous entries into a franchise. From those things, it's quite easy to conclude whether or not a game will be better than another. PARTICULARLY when the game the unreleased game's being compared to is so horrible.

I've repeatedly had this argument (and won) with probably 20 people, so I'm not going to go through every thing again.
You are only partially right. You can take an educated guess on the quality of the next game of a certain developer (even easier if you want to determine whether it will be good or bad), but you can rarely come to a definitive conclusion. Besides, according to your logic, Bethesda will most definitely make a mediocre game out of Skyrim, seeing as their quality of games has taken a nosedive after Morrowind and just keeps getting significantly worse, so I'm not so sure whether it'll be better than the mediocre RDR for example.

The fact that you've argued with people that you can come to a definitive conclusion over a subject like this and won (Although winning on the Internet is rarely actual objective winning, so excuse me when I dismiss that claim) doesn't really mean that you have a flawless argument in this case.

I mean of course, I understand. People, for some reason, found those piles of mediocrity and shit (Oblivion and Fallout 3) to be true gems and of course they will assume that Skyrim and any other game made by Bethesda will be a great game. It's just that people are starting to get sick of the fact that this game, which, regardless of who's making the game, in the end has not been released to the public yet and still constantly gets shown next to legitimately great games that many people have already played and loved.

I'm TECHNICALLY cheating here, but for me, it was Reach.

Now, before you ask, I don't necessarily 'hate' the game. I still love it and I find it a very excellent installment to the franchise, and I still play it regularly. However, while I originally thought Bungie tried their hardest in innovating the franchise and giving it a good send-off, on closer scrutiny the Campaign feels rushed and kinda mediocre, especially given the content that was promised and the books that were sorely neglected, and the Multiplayer maps do start to get dull and uninspired after a while, a problem that was never in Halo 3 (imo).

I still love Reach. I won't deny that. I'll play that over CoD almost every other day. I just think that, as a successor to Halo 3 and as the final Bungie Halo game, it felt like a disappointment. Even moreso than ODST.

Gears of War 3... holy crap was that game average in every way. There wasn't a single memorable battle or character through the 12 hour campaign and the multiplayer just had a bunch of twits shotgun rolling and tossing grenades.

The worst part about the multiplayer is that you can literally be shooting someone who is out in the open and walking, and somehow a full magazine of ammunition isn't enough to slow them down. They find cover and are able to kill you with a sawed off shotgun. Yeah, GOW 3 sucks. I traded it in for Deus Ex after a week, which is a MUCH better game.
I agree with you're hatred with the multiplayer but if you get a few friends together and play the campaign or Horde mode the game becomes one of the most enjoyable shooters in recent memory. But yeah my god does MP suck in that game.

The game I got most hyped for in the past 10 years and the one that disappointed me the most was Fable. I read a ton of articles hyping various features of the game such as the "reactive world" and "heroes that will compete with you."

Even though the game turned out to be a fun and solid game it never lived up to the expectations I had for it. I was a victim of the Molyneux hype machine.

It wasn't all bad though. From that incident I learned to try and ignore any hype about a game before it comes out. By avoiding getting hyped for a game I've been able to play them on my own terms and I've found that it makes most games pretty enjoyable.

Laughed my ass off at that, Thank you ^^

OT: Definitely Black ops for me since it was only just Average, another generic shooter in the series which may have reached its end.... or atleast I hope.

-Any Assassin's Creed game (these aren't bad, they're just overhyped; Though Ubisoft's DRM can choke on a dick)
-Oblivion and Fallout 3
-Halo. Motherfucking HALO. (You can thank this game series for condemning most of the FPS genre to bland formulaic mediocrity for the better part of the last decade)
-Call of Duty is the new Halo. Enough said.
-Half Life 2 (it's good, and an especially good example of strong level design in an FPS...but Gordon Freeman is NOT a good character, and Alyx Vance, nice as she is, is quite overrated. To the point of being worshiped)

Assassins Creed.
Just finished GTA IV when I started on it, and I thought it was all the same: You walk somewhere, play a run and retrieve mission/Timetrail/kill this evil guy etc.

This is not my game, friend

it's nice to see a topic like this. It's a very sensitive thing to discuss as die-hard fans of said games have the unfortunate tendency to rage about every slight hint of crtiticism.

I don't care too much about Halo and Gears of War. Frankly, I can't stand the way enemies suck up damage like sponges and then ragdolise whe their health depletes. There's just something wrong about the feel of shooting things in those games. I'm also getting tired of God of War series. Great games, just too many of them and each one is the same with better graphics and different levels. Next, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. To me, it was a disappointment. The story was far less interesting than in AC2, camera and controlls were clunkier than ever and the framerate was all over the place. Lastly, the GTA series. I am the kind of game who needs to be immersed in a story and be led through it by the game. I want to be able to see everything the game has to offer in a single playthrough. I am a completionist and I have the compulsion to do all the sidequests and things like that. That's why I find open-world games frustrating. I know it's weird but I prefer linear, story-driven experience over open-world structure in my games. That's why, unlike most people, I was pleased by the story-driven structure of Mafia 2 and why, unlike most people, I could never get into GTA series. That's changing though. I'm actually learning to ignore the open-world premise in favor of going through the game, mission to mission. Yes, I know I'm skipping large chunks of the game. But I need my story-driven experience and GTA games have some of the best stories and writing in the industry.

Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PC.

The game and story itself are quite good, but the controlscheme (even if I change it) makes me dislike it.

fair enough. I didn't see the point. but I used the buttons 95% of the time in diamond anyways.

I didn't notice any difference between between the battle animations in this one, or the previous ones. And you've totally disregarded the fact that the overworld got a massive upgrade. But really, Pokemon has always had subpar graphics, even by DS/GBA/GBC standards.

the new level-up system forces you to train in other areas instead of staying in one favorable area
don't know what your on about there, i didn't play the game any differently than i'd played previous.

thats your opinion. I don't see how they were any more forgettable than last generations. I can remember my starting pokemon, the legendaries and a handful of random ones from both.
