Being the hipster that I am I played most of them before they were recommended so I can't say it put me off though.
What actually is a hipster? Not sure we have that term in the UK. From the context, I'm guessing it's someone who buys a lot of stuff?
Someone who hates anything that are mainstream just because it's popular. Here's stuff too look for when spotting a hipster.

(I was being sarcastic when I said I was one since I played them before they were popular is something a hipster would say)

We have plenty of hipsters in the UK, don't really know if we would have an out and out term for them though. Think students, Johnny Borrell, those annoying kids from The View or any other Indie band

Basically, people who 'stay ahead' of what's cool
Fair enough. Can't say I know anyone like that personally. (Probably a good thing.)

I guess it's an ironic idea to apply to video games anyway. They never become "cool"!

What you said pretty much defines my feeling for Ocarina of Time

I never played that game, and I REALLY want to play it, but the sheer number of people screaming

BEST GAME OF ALL TIME
99/100 METACRITICS
FIRST 40 FAMITSU

Put me off completely.

Nope. When something gets recommended to me a lot, I think "Wow, this thing must be really good, to get so many recommendations". If I then end up seeing/reading/playing it and it's not my cup of tea, I think "Damn, I must be missing the thing that makes it so great, I feel like I'm missing out".

At no point do recommendations, or popular/critical acclaim make me avoid something. Because that would be incredibly stupid.

Stop being humble and reasonable on the internet.

It's embarrassing and disconcerting.
