Yes! I played this game and rented it a fair amount back in the day.
This reminded me of another game I rented and played quite a bit of around that time, and lo and behold when I go to look it up I’m pleasantly surprised with this announcement from last year -

I hope it sees the light of day neon lights sooner than later, and that it’s given the proper update treatment.

My bro and I played the first one, but never got around the sequel prequel. We did know about the lesbian scene, because Tech TV's GameSpot TV (before it became Extended Play and later X-Play) wouldn't shut up about it for a month. Sweet! We're getting a whole bunch of old PS1/PS2 (style) games coming out to the forefront.

OK, so also at the risk of starting shit: Dead Island has been over-hyped, at least in this thread

OK so...did any of you actually play DI? Because calling it mediocre is being charitable. A janky bastard child of Borderlands and L4D that manages to be worse than either. This is a game that let's you spec into a gun-centric character and then not give you a gun until half way through. That has about half a dozen different weapons you find in the hundreds but oh this piece of wood has purple text and +0.1 swing speed over your current board. An open world game with nothing interesting to do except trudge back and forth constantly for a weak story between the same locations killing never ending zombies that never feels fun because all you do is smack them over and over a dozen times because this is one of those awful 'number shooters' where you just chip numbers off of enemies health bars for minutes on end, before you even get to the bland special zombies.

What's worse is that this heap came out in 2011. L4D2 had already been running rings around it for years as far as coop zombie killing goes, COD just released their own high point in couch zombie killing with Black Ops, and DayZ was still a free mod for Arma 2 if you wanted an open world zombie survival experience, and zombies in general were already feeling worn out. This is why everyone was excited about Dead Islands trailer (which was one of the first big 'this trailer was a total lie' moments lest we forget), because it looked like we were going to get an actual narrative driven zombie game that went further than just 'click zombie until dead'. This is why Telltales TWD game, which came out the next year, was so beloved, because it did give us just that, which means it wasn't just some small minority.

I mean, if you want further proof, the fact that they basically took all the junk out (different characters with useless skills, boring guns, bland enemies) and put in parkour (Dying Light) and was way better received should be evident enough about how bad DI was. There's a reason nobody really talks about DI, and it's not because it was some forgotten or misunderstood gem.
Well, the reason I posted on it was because I remembered thinking the game was pretty bleh at the time but I didn't remember hating it nearly as much as everyone else seemed to. I absolutely remember a lot of people hating it and I know exactly what you're talking about with the trailer, but when I went to refresh my memory on the backlash before trying to go to bat for it as a blah experience rather than awful I just wasn't finding evidence of the old anger. I'm not gonna lie - I didn't dig that deep. The idea of going back through old forum fights to find the correct hate to support my position was not to my taste. But the fact that I remember so clearly the game being shat on, and then I turn around and find an only below average review score had me questioning my experiences.

And I like said before, you aren't exactly wrong. The hate only happened, because people hyped up and gaslighted themselves expecting something grander and greater, because a CG trailer. They have no one to blame, but themselves.

@Old_Hunter_77, this next one isn't overrated/hated, and more of a underrated example. This game got great reviews, but sold horribly due to EA not really advertising the game. Suda51's Shadows of the Damned. If you ever decide to get the remaster, I suggest you play it once. The game won't change your life, but it's a cool RE4 style shooter that is tons of fun, dark and colorful, and just has that road movie feel. I know you said you don't do horror games, but Shadows is more of an action game with some creepy traps of horror. Surprisingly, the game isn't overly dark in lighting. While light and darkness do play role thematically and coloring wise, unlike Dead Space Remake or the RE games, you will rarely or never have to adjust much. I know you don't have an XBOX anymore (nor a PS3), but Grasshopper is doing a remaster of this game for all current platforms.

Well that's certainly a good answer to the thread topic since I never heard of it (or don't remember it). I probably won't play it since I have no interest in playing the remaster/nostalgia circuit at all but if I see it pop up in the streaming/review cycle I'll now know what it is. It looks fun.

I said EA not really advertised it, they really did not advertise it. The most the game got was about three trailers and that was it. No web ads, and and only a few reviews here and there.

No problem.

@CriticalGaming, @hanselthecaretaker2, & @Old_Hunter_77, remember The Order: 1886?

That one I felt got the right amount of hate. Some feelings have softened over time, but I don't even see myself getting the game for 99 cents. Everything about The Order ended up being done better in either Bloodborne, Evil West, or many other 3rd person action games that came out afterward. Jake in the second video I am bit not certain on. I get why he likes it, but nobody is "wrong" for passing on this game, or not wanting to waste money on it. Like Gaming Brit said in the first video, people were long past tired of generic cover shooters by 2015, and The Order didn't much to differentiate other than a wasted setting, and banking on a obvious sequel hook.

That only further proves my and others point, that couldn't get into this game. People forgot about this game, more or less, after a year and when Bloodborne came out.

It was a graphical showcase for PS4, but otherwise mostly a shit show. That’s the last I’ve heard of Ready @ Dawn too. Goes to show there’s not much room for error in this industry sometimes.

Sonic Mania I always found okay and really over hyped by people (Matt Simmons, Pat Stares At, and Yahtzee) who don't like 3D Sonic/Team Sonic games. I like Mania, but my main problem was that it's spends too many times rehashing old levels for half the game. Sure they are done with interesting twists, but you're still reusing old levels. You can blame that specifically on the executives at Sega. The Mania Team wanted more original levels, but the executives wouldn't budge.

Best Bad Game of 2023 my ass! Wanted: Dead is not entertainingly bad. It's just a mediocre game that uses the worse parts of old-school difficulty, quirky for the sake of it, and is too janky of action game of this caliber coming from ex-Ninja Gaiden devs.
