As the topic says, what are some classic rock and metal bands you think are overpraised, and what ones do you think need a bit more attention? And why? I specify classic, because I am trying to avoid the influx of "lolJustinBiebersucks". I honestly just want to have a reasonable discussion about bands that are either put up on a ridiculous pedestal, and bands that are put unfairly in the dark corner.

For my part, I think U2 is a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong, "Joshua Tree", "One", both great albums. but two great albums is not enough, I feel, to give Bono the right to act as, frankly, stuck-up as he does. And I always get a bit annoyed at how over-dramatic their songs are. Not so much in subject matter, but they have ridiculous reverb on the guitar, echoing shouted choruses, and so on.

On the flip side, I think a-ha deserved a bit more attention in the United States than it got. They were pretty big in Europe, but in the States, they are pretty much known for nothing other than the insanely catchy "Take on Me". However, they actually have quite a bit of talent, and I enjoyed listening to their second biggest hit in the States "The Sun Always Shines on TV", and their theme song for "The Living Daylights" is one of my favorite James Bond themes.

So, do you agree, disagree, or do you have some other options to vent about/discuss? And please, try to keep it civil. None of this "How can anybody like this band?! They so obviously suck!"

Finally, to set the standard for "classic", I consider everything 15 years or older in music to be considered "classic", so try to keep it to late 90's and earlier. I look forward to an interesting discussion.

That is pretty broad, to be honest. Would you also consider an obscure death metal demo recording from a Latvian band back in '93 to be considered "classic" metal?

I would assume not, so I'll stick it to the more "classic" versions of the metal genre, such as heavy/epic doom. Russia's Scald is a great example of a magnificent band with a bright future that was cut short due to a death. One of the greatest albums I've ever heard that has sadly barely scratched the surface in recognition. It was released back in '97, so I think it fits your age criteria. Here's my favourite from it:

Had one hell of a singer, that's for sure. Sound quality of the album is a bit rough, but if you're a metal fan by any stretch, you're probably more than used to that.

As for overrated? I'd probably have to say Venom. Sure, they influenced countless extreme metal bands, and deserve all the credit in the world for that. But musically? Musically they were very mediocre, it just has to be said.

Well, for under rated classic rock (well, it's prog rock but as it's over 15 years old I feel it fits) I'll put Genesis. I have never met anyone in real life who has even heard of them and when I was younger I was mocked for listening to them, that is despite people not listening to them.

That being said they have a great catalog of music and somehow came out for the better despite 2 band members leaving.
I'm surprised no one you've met knows who Genesis is. The entire "Invisible Touch" album is a classic.

I have a few bands that i think are under-rated, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish being my favorites.

Just a couple of my favorite songs.
