I could be wrong, but I think when someone calls something overrated, they mean that a lot of people like it simply because it is popular, and not much apart from that.

When people consider something underrated, it's probably something worth recognising that wasn't marketed very well, and so not many people knew about it.

Wait, so you're implying that people should be okay with the opinions of OTHER people?? W-what, I-I've never heard of such utter nonsense in all my years! Heretic! Heretic to the internet!

But seriously, I wish people could be fine with other people liking something much more than they do, or not liking something as much as they do, but sadly, as much as we bring the "opinions are opinions" topic up, it'll never change the minds of the thousands that love the arguing.

But hey, sometimes the fights are fun to watch... from a distance.

So you respect everyone's opinions? Except the opinions of those who DON'T respect the opinions of those they disagree with? And you don't respect the opinions of those people because... you disagree? Meaning you are exactly like them?

Logic. It has gone somewhere far, far away.

One of my favorite games of all time is star wars rebel assault, but I'm not going to claim other people are underrating it.
Wouldn't the implication of that be that you do genuinely think people are underrating it, you just don't want to say it to hide a view you're ashamed of having?

I don't believe I ever said I don't respect those people. In fact, I said they could be entertaining. It's just a shame it has to get so critical is all - a disappointment. Nothing more.
They can argue however they want.

Don't look too deeply into the paradoxes. They have been known to rupture brains in the past.

The issue I have when people use the word "overrated" is when they state their opinion that something is overrated without giving any explanation as to why, so instead of hearing an opinion that could stir an interesting conversation on the game's positive or negative qualities, I hear, "All these people like this game, but I don't. See what a special and unique snowflake I am?"

Use of the term "Overrated" doesn't necessarily imply the wielder holds a strictly negative connotation of the subject, or its audience. It can be used to denote mere disagreement, and not just contempt with said disagreement.

Example:
I find Final Fantasy 7 to be overrated, but I still like that game.
Alternatively:
"I like Final Fantasy 7 just fine, but I don't think it's the Best Game Ever. In my opinion, it's overrated."

Simple form of dissent; not contempt. These concepts are not synonymous with each other.

I think it's actually a pretty efficient way of saying "This content deserves more appreciation than it gets". Perhaps the term is overused, or used in stupid ways occasionally, but it has a very useful meaning.

I think the problem is that people use the word "Overrated" as an insult much of the time. People, now of days, instantly thing that your favorite thing sucks when they call it overrated, when it really isn't. You can find something that's overrated and still enjoy it. Do I think Call of Duty is overrated. Yup, but don't think it's a god awful atrocity as so many people think it is. Overrated simply means you think something is overly praised, but just because something is overly praised doesn't mean that it's bad. You can find enjoyment out of it.

The term 'Over-rated' has become so overused it is now essentially meaningless. I mean that quite literally, whenever anyone says 'overrated' I have to ask them to explain what they mean as I cant tell anymore. They could mean that it over-sold relative to its quality, or that gamers give it too much praise, that critics like it too much, or that it shouldnt have won an award, or that people think too highly of it in general, then we get into issues like how each individual person has a different perception on all of the above, yeah the term has been completley done to death.

Part of the problem is that whether or not something is overrated relies on there being an understood perception of it ,and building a widely understood perception takes time, i would say that you should never apply the term to anything that has yet to settle into its place in the popular culture. If you are claiming something is 'overrated' within the week it came out? You are wrong, it's impossible to say at that point, as a general rule, if the game has been out for less than a year it is too early to say whether or not it is over-rated.
