You know the sorts of movies I'm talking about. They're okay, a bit artsy, and anyone who wants to seem the least bit deep treats them like they're the newest testament of the freaking gospel.

Sometimes it's because of the director, sometimes it's the dark/edgy subject matter, but regardless, name a movie that you feel is dramatically overrated. If you want to explain it, go for it. If not, this is your sounding board, so out with it!

I'll start:

A Clockwork Orange. Yeah, Kubrik's good at things. Yeah, there's a lot going on in this one. Yeah, it's got some edge to it. But no, liking this movie doesn't make you deep. And it's not a damned masterpiece.

I really think people just pretend to like it so much so that everyone will then assume they "get it," and they'll never actually have to demonstrate that they do, in fact, get it. It's like someone constantly overstating a qualification so that no one will ever ask them to show the documentation.

Can I?

Avatar. I hate Avatar with a fiery passion.

I really didn't find it that pretty and I sure as shit didn't find it any smart. He had the worst, most pandering, most annoying, most obvious set of messages I've ever seen in that film. I thought I would hate it before I saw, but I had no idea.

DISCLAIMER: I have nothing against shallow entertainment. I liked The Expendables. My favorite movie is The Rock.

Avatar just pissed me off so much by pretending to be smart and edgy. It's none of that.

And it wasn't even that good-looking.

Damn. My first thought was ninja'd. And this pretty much sums up my thoughts on it too.

The first paragraph is my thoughs on that movie as well. Though I tend to think that a lot of people like this movie to be edgy and secretly wish they were Alex before he was sent to prison. I had very little sympathy for Alex. Call me heartless, but through most of it, all I could think was "he got what was coming to him." Only after he got out of prison and was disowned by his family and old friends did I really have any sympathy for him at all. So even if I "got" Kubrick's message, I'm not sure I totally agree with it. He made his protagonist too much of a dick. People like Alex are by far the people I have the hardest time respecting.

Anyway, as far as overrated movies I don't like, I was going to say Avatar, but instead, I think I'm gonna go with 2001: A Space Odyssey. I had a very hard time keeping awake watching it, much less paying any attention. By the time they got to HAL my friends and I had all stopped paying attention and we only really went back to noticing any of it when the credits were rolling. Maybe I'll give it another try sometime, but until I do, it's just behind Avatar on this list to me.

For me, I'd say Heat, the Michael Mann film from 1995.
I had high hopes for it- (Al Pacino and Robert Deniro is the same scene together? Hell yeah!)
But alas, I found it overall dull and confusing.
That and I had to constantly readjust the volume because the voices were too quiet and the gunshots were too loud.

This is pretty much exactly how I feel, but with chemistry/mineral business mistakes that the film made also irritated me.

Like Unobtainiums price, what the hell does it do?

You know he only got rewarded for it cause he kinda died, right?
Please, don't go there mate.
I'm begging you.
To each his own opinion, and I'll respect yours.
But you could say that to some folks, and I am not joking, they would hit you for that.
People can get super offended by those kind of comments.

I am about to say two films that may very well get me ostracised from this forum, but Pulp Fiction and Fight club. I found both of them to be overly stylized and I never once found myself involved with any of the characters or their situations.
I agree with you on the Fight Club one - I never saw what was so great about it. It was good at best.
I've never seen Pulp Fiction, so I can't say much about that.

And I thought The Dark Knight was extremely overrated for such an okay movie.

I'm not a fanboy in any way - I thought it was good, but nothing special - but I'll have to call you up on this one.
It's one of the prettiest films I've ever seen.

Can you think of any movie that was better looking?

300, just didn't like it. The whole film just felt kinda "meh" to me. Stopped really caring about watching the film after a while. Hell i started to fall asleep in the cinema

People should grow up then.
Blockbusters and superhero movies specifically don't usually get rewards for acting. I won't say more. I won't argue.
Just because it isn't the norm doesn't mean he couldn't give a stellar performance in a genre usually cluttered with less then top notch acting.

Can I fudge a bit and mention three?

Here they are (in no particular order):
Forrest Gump- The only thing I liked about this movie was the war segments. I don't understand it's appeal. It didn't help that the two major female characters are both hypocritical whores.

The Da Vinci Code (book applies here as well)- Good God, everybody stop treating it like it's some kind of revelation. I can't tell you how many people have tried to use the story (a story that is clearly FICTIONAL) to support some half-baked conspiracy theory of theirs about the Illuminati controlling the world. Oh yeah, and the supposed "truth" about Jesus and other Biblical figures? The author pulled those "facts" out of his ass.

M*A*S*H- Now I love M*A*S*H. It's one of the greatest TV series of all time, in my humble opinion. As you probably guessed, this is about the movie. It's just a series of glorified frat-boy pranks by immature, chauvinist pricks who just happen to be surgeons working near the front lines. I understand this is meant to be some kind of biting satire against the Vietnam War and cultural and religious norms, but it just comes across as being far too cynical and juvenile.

But...but...2001's a CLASSIC!

Okay, I'll admit it can be pretty slow at times, but you have to remember it was a ground-breaking film for it's time. Also, it's one of the few science fiction films that depicts space realistically.

I was a military history major at West Point so yeah, that movie offended me on an intellectual level like no other.
