i actually just watched (literally got back like half hour ago) and first off: LOVE!! <3<3<3 :D and secondly... no... just NO!! no one should compare this to EVA... and for irony's sake this actually has nothing to do with i love that series for its morbid fucked-in-the-head-ness... these two things should be left in two different damn corners...

EVA's primary objective is to completely deconstruct the entire Mecha genre as a whole, the whole Angels=Kaijuu bit is just a gimmick in the series so the EVAs have something 'non-human' to fight and therefore not be Gundam... but its all about just how psychologically fucked-in-the-head it is and its characters... its not supposed to be pretty, and anyone who likes it for its 'super great moral'-ness needs to be sent to a psyche ward... you love it for the previously mentioned gritty fucked-in-the-head-ness... and gruesome mecha battles :3

Pacific Rim is... well quite frankly its the greatest combination of goddamn americanized giant mech love and old japanese godzilla/mothra/king gigadora movies i've ever seen... no, NOT GUNDAM, AMERICAN/western mecha-brands like Mech Assault or Front Mission... with the whole JAPANESE/eastern feel of things like OG Kaijuu movies like Godzilla, Mothra, King Gigadora, Riodan, etc. etc. etc. the blend is nice, seamless, and ohmigawd do i love it <3 yes, it has character moments and yes they have their issues... but the movie isn't about their issues... ITS ABOUT GODDAMN MECHS PUNCHING KAIJUU IN THE FACE!! XD WOO~!!!

so for all that is unholy, i will freakin' go Gypsy on ANYONE that fucking puts Pacific Rim and EVA within 100ft of each other... bitchslapping just WILL NOT suffice... two different beasts people, two different beasts...

To me the film looked like that bit that happens at the end of every Power Rangers episode where all the little robots form up to a great big robot and then they fight a big monster on the moon. That was my first experience of the Mecha and Kaiju kind of thing.

Yeah, it is nothing like Evangelion unless you think films should be judged based on a simple sentence summary "giant piloted robots protect cities from giant weird looking monsters from another dimension bent on destroying everything".

I think you can tell that the authors of Pacific Rim are fans of Evangelion but unfortunately a significant portion of the Evangelion fan-base are the type to misconstrue shout-out references with copying from the one true God that is NGE.
