Well, it's a lot of big overly rendered CGI stuff all over the screen - It's not something for me to get really excited about anymore. I saw the same thing in The Avengers and The Hobbit.

Really, what else is new?

Could you have at least chosen two films that had giant robots in it? Seriously, comparing a scrotum-bearded goblin to humongous mecha swatting royalty-free Godzilla with a baseball bat? You might as well say all modern games are just 3D imagery rendered in real-time or modernized throwbacks to the 8-bit era, so there's no point in playing anything anymore.

Myself, I'm cautiously optimistic. I love me a good kaiju movie, and while rubber suits lend a certain charm to the genre, I'd love to see a CGI execution that doesn't suck (I'm looking at you, Cloverfield and not-Godzilla movie by Roland Emmerich). Guillermo del Toro has shown that he can make a good effects-laden movie, both of the CGI and heavy makeup variety.

I am implying that Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was dumb, but not ALL Godzilla movies are bad, its just after making 24 of the damn movies your going to have a lot of them that aren't good.

I think it is just because most people (myself included) think this movie looks like absolute shit. I won't immediatly write it off solely because it is being made by Guillermo del Toro and that man is very good at his job (usually) but the entire premise just seems like an attempt to cash in on all the money the Transformers have been inexplicably making, and all in all the whole idea of it just seems dumb. Not to mention, do you remember the last time giant robots fought giant monsters?

I'm not trying to convince you not to watch it, I'm just throwing out the honest reason why I think nobodies really talking about this movie.

pretty sure you haven't seen the three godzilla movies before that one comparatively that one is GOLD on it's own it's still a good movie

I totally feel where you're coming from on the CGI though. Pacific Rim is one of the few films in recent memory that justified the CGI extravagance. The use of CGI in The Hobbit though was just depressing. Going from the LotR films which had so much practical effects work to a film that was just doused in CGI disheartened me greatly. There was such a weight and a presence to much of the effects work in the original trilogy, and it was completely abandoned in The Hobbit for reasons I really don't understand. It didn't look better or more convincing, and all the fights felt flimsy and cartoonish with no violence or sense of impact. At this point, CGI to me is much like teal and orange. Nothing inherently wrong with it, but it's used so frustratingly frequently to paper up creative cracks I can't help but automatically dislike it.

I don't know, since I saw Django and being reminded what an actual movie feels like without all the CGI/3D/48 FPS bullcrap we're exposed to currently, my patience with these big thumping CGI movies is really starting to wear thin.

Now I know you can't escape the use of CGI, but most of these movies today feel like bare bones structures that they wheel on over to the nearest, cheapest VFX studio, and load it up with as much fancy computer animation they can. All sense of creativity is gone and it's become like an esembly line production.

That looke terrible in my opinion. The origin of the monsters sounds cool, but everything else, from the giant emotion fueled robots to the cheesy speech made me want to cry. If it gets really good reviews I will go but I'm not hopeful.

Giant robots fighting giant monsters is silly. That's kind of the point It's a modern-day, big-budget daikaiju movie. Think of it more like godzilla, gamera, ultraman or the Megazord fights from power rangers, than some of the more recent, more 'serious' giant monster movies.

You have the right mindset though. Sometimes a movie doesn't necessarily NEED to be super deep, or super serious. Sometimes it just needs to be fun. That's what kaiju movies were about most of the time, just watching two huge, crazy-looking monsters slug it out and beat the crap out of each other while they destroyed an extremely elaborate set of miniatures.

Personally, I hope this movie does well. It's an original, new IP in a time where most of the big-budget movies getting made are sequels or cash-grabs of known properties. And on top of that, it looks like it's trying to be a proper daikaiju movie, and it's been decades since there was one big enough and mainstream enough to get a wide theatrical release. After massive disappointments like Cloverfield, or Monsters and huge disasters like the American Godzilla film, it would be amazing to see a real, big-budget kaiju film in theaters, and maybe give the genre a bit of a shot in the arm.

See, the whole Kaiju element to it is the only reason I'm going to go see it. I miss the old Godzilla movies. I miss giant monsters destroying cities and annihilating armies before being beaten down by other giant monsters. It's an old genre that I think needs to be revitalized with our enlightened future graphics technology.

I'm not some high-brow movie buff I'll see goofy movies. Its just I don't like Japanese style movies, games, Anima, whatever. Nothing against them its just not my cup of tea. However this looks like it could be fun.

Well, CGI or not, it's mostly the designs I'm exited about. It's Del Toro, he's one helluva character designer. The monsters, the robots, bring 'em on.

Honestly the first thing i thought of when i saw this was Crysis. But OT ya it looks like this is a battleship/transformers crossover and honestly I think it looks good and i usually never judge an action film by its trailer. But who knows it could be good...just not very hopeful

Edit: Oh and the other thing i thought of was the AT&T commercial where they are trying to say that bigger is better....which is wrong lol but thats for another discussion

I'd like it to be more than that, but if it isn't there's space in life for big loud dumb movies, it won't be anything like as boring as when JJ Abrams makes big loud dumb movies either, because Del Toro.

Fortunately, I don't care about these kinds of complaints, because this is a film about giant fucking robots punching giant fucking monsters in the face. When that's your starting point there's very little that can take me out of the film.

I second this opinion. There is a proper time for snobbery and a time to just kick back. We don't have to get defensive as there is no nostalgic franchise at stake, it has a lot of cool elements and del Toro seems to love this material so i see no reason not to get excited about this

You kind of have to admit that a lot of elements seem intrinsically familiar to mecha and kaiju fans such as the giant robots, mind melding and even the name of the monsters. Why would del Toro call them kaiju if he didn't want to have some connection to the concept; I doubt most Americans know that the word even exists. Mecha and Kaiju properties were, at the start, more based around having fun; mecha only had its dramatic turn with Gundam Wing and Evangelion. But a lot of properties still have a light hearted sense so that old spirit is still there.

Here's the difference between Bay and del Toro: Bay took an entire continuity and ruined it while del Toro is taking overarching tropes and utilizing them in a market normally not associated with them
