That's one of my pet peeves for Pacific Rim. Giant robot built to punch things? That and needing two pilots to do everything in tandem is the stupidest thing i've seen since they turned Silver Samurai into a robot. I was excited when I first heard about it, now not so much.

It's definitely on my radar.
I just find it hard to hype anything, nowadays. Nothing good ever comes of it.

Edit: Ok, I didn't realize I missed the latest trailer.
Just watched it, and I think I have to change my pants.
I don't know if it will be an objectively good movie, but I know I will enjoy it.

I cant quite put my finger on why people arn't more taken with it as they are with...say...Man of Steel or Elysium (which is basically just district 9 in space.

Swords are in. Guns are in. Most weaponry appears to be blunt impact trauma..something about toxix blood being bad.

And I won't do anything :p I can totally understand it being derided as a derivative take on classic mecha anime, Eva in particular. But I think there has been a tad too much framing of the issue with regards to eva. One is an existential drama in which the eva are the dramatic centrepiece and catalyst; this appears to be more 'transformers' in the way that the robots are being objectified from a marketing perspective.

Robots vs. Monsters is fine when you've got the king of monster movies handling it ;)

Just look at my profile pic. JUST LOOK AT IT GOD DAMN IT! Saying that I'm hyped for that film is to say nothing! I don't even really know why I'm so hyped. Maybe that's because the theme of giant robots fighting giant monsters isn't so much explored in modern movies. Or maybe that's because Del Toro directing it. Or maybe that's because I'm sucker for cool designs, and Jaegers are fucking amazingly designed. Anyway, I'm SUUUPER hyped for that movie and July 12 can't come soon enough!

Guillermo del Toro knows what he is doing. This movie is going to be awesome. It won't be another Michael Bay Transformers fuck up.

I am very, VERY excited for this film.

Idris Elba is in it.

Charlie Day is in it.

Del fuckin Toro is directing. If anything, I want this film to succeed just so Del Toro can finally get funding for his 'Into the Mouth of Madness' adaptation he wanted to do.
Charlie FUCKING Day is in it?!? I was excited before, man. Idris Elba was good enough. The Ron Perlman. But now Charlie Day. Fuck all of you, this movie is going to be the best tihng ever in the world. Ever.

Ok, seriously I'm excited. I was excited from the start. But it's sad to see the LACK of excitement, especially here. You guys know this is about giant robots punching giant monsters, right? I mean... That's it. And Idris Elba, Ron perlman and Charlie Day will be in those robots. Why would you think there should be any more to it than that? It's always going to be better than Transformers so, it's Transformers but good. Guys, we should be excited.

It's a movie. What's to get excited about?

That's not to say it will be a bad movie. Giant robots fighting giant monsters directed by Guillermo del Toro? I'm up for that. I expect it will be a thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes or so. But that's all it will be. Visually impressive and entertaining.

Exactly how excited is one supposed get over 90 minutes of entertaining images?
Well, I guess if you don't like films you won't like this film.

The trailer looked good, the monsters looked interesting and it was a different take on the disaster film...
Until the robots showed up. Really? Iron Man/Transformers styled money-grab? I don't like those films and I don't like the fact that some childish 'super-robot' is being used to fight the monsters. It just seems like a fighting film, when it could have been interesting and had depth.

I guess a lot of us have gotten tired of disappointment. Look what happened with Prometheus. Ridley Scott doing sci-fi. With a great (imo) cast. And what happens? A visually stunning catastrophe with plot holes you could drive the HMS Ark Royal through.

I think it is just because most people (myself included) think this movie looks like absolute shit. I won't immediatly write it off solely because it is being made by Guillermo del Toro and that man is very good at his job (usually) but the entire premise just seems like an attempt to cash in on all the money the Transformers have been inexplicably making, and all in all the whole idea of it just seems dumb. Not to mention, do you remember the last time giant robots fought giant monsters?

I'm not trying to convince you not to watch it, I'm just throwing out the honest reason why I think nobodies really talking about this movie.
Are you implying that Godzilla was bad?

To each his own of course and complete respect to your feelings, but this statement made me do a double take. I cannot fathom how the latter part of your statement preceded the former without irony.

OT: I have been fond of much of Del Toro's other work, especially Pan's Labyrinth. While my tastes in movies tend to be toward the more dramatic and character focussed, I do go in for a punch up now and again. I really, really liked Judge Dredd and also enjoyed Real Steel despite it being a kid's movie. If Pacific Rim can fall somewhere between the two (and lets face it, Reel Steel does not set a high bar, despite my enjoyment of it) I will be happy to have seen it.

I was inclined to agree, then saw some brief 'making of' video that explained it in a way that wasn't totally nonsense. Something about direct neural connections between the pilot and machine, and how the machines are so huge that they fry the brain of a solo pilot, hence the need for two. Not exactly high science, but enough that I'm willing to see what they do with it.

]I see a lot of snobbery in this thread.

I'm excited for it. I like Guillermo del Toro. I like mecha anime. I think it looks awesome. I can't say that's it gonna have a shitty plot or a great plot only judging by the trailers. The whole "melding minds" thing seems like it could be interesting. Nonetheless, I just hope it's gonna be great popcorn fun.
I second this opinion. There is a proper time for snobbery and a time to just kick back. We don't have to get defensive as there is no nostalgic franchise at stake, it has a lot of cool elements and del Toro seems to love this material so i see no reason not to get excited about this
