So my question is where can Pacific Rim be taken from here? Or should it even be taken anywhere? Last thing we want is movies becoming like the game industry where everything must become a franchise, and nothing is allowed unless they believe they can pound at least 2 sequels out of it. Also add in the fact that, avoiding spoilers as much as possible, Pacific Rim wrapped itself up rather neatly. Not much room to go off of.

Yet, at the same time, I want more of this, as long as the majority of the people behind it return. I have heard/seen the idea tossed around a bit, and I think a prequel could have a lot of potential, getting into the early years of the war, Pentecost's backstory, more into the history behind the other jaegers and their crews.

I could see a prequel. Sequel though...then they'd have to really stretch the story as, as you said it was wrapped up pretty nicely.

Sequel wouldn't be difficult to do, and it would likely improve on some of the movie's weaker parts.

Plus it would help convince Hollywood that giant robots don't need to be awful to make money.

Prequel would be a tad predictable though since from all reports, Jaegers won like 90% of the time before Knife Head beat the shit out of Gipsy Danger.

I think a sequel could work, say the Precursors try similar shit again, or like theres a world war since the countries dont have a common foe to ally against, and some countries do like some Kaiju experiments of their own, requiring Jaegers to fight against them etc

Not sure it can really go anywhere. The ending was pretty much a open and closed case. Also I don't think making a new Pacific Rim of any kind would be a good idea, America's erection has already gone on for too long. Any more and it might fall off.

Prequel would be perfect. Show us prior 20 years of Kaiju wars, show us the time when Jaegers pilots were considered "New Rock Stars", show us Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon kicking some major ass!!!

I liked how Pacific Rim ended; but I feel torn on what I want it to do as a whole; on the one hand I'd like to see more space opera style stuff like Voltron/Go Lion but with that comes the inevitable scrutiny of turbo nerds (a behaviour of which I was guilty for many years) who are treating it like the Autopsy of Christ rather than a movie.

I could go for more Pacific Rim. A sequel might not work, but a prequel probably would.

Personally, I think a prequel that focuses on the Australian duo might be kinda interesting. Everyone seems to think they're unstoppable badasses in the movie, and another movie to add some context to this would be welcome.

And as a prequel, we'd get to see alot more Jaegers in action, since apparently every country had their own Jaeger at one point, not unlike G Gundam.

Indeed, when I read somewhere that Del Toro was excited at the idea of a Pacific Rim/Godzilla crossover, I admit that the idea excited me as well, but it was crushed by this very thought.

According to wikipedia the sequel may feature Jaeger Kaiju Drifting and a Jaeger Kaiju Hybrid but its wikipedia so yeah, may not be accurate, but i would prefer a prequel if it was a sequel it could have that Jaegers fight each others or artificial Kaijus for sport

Could also just feature gundams fighting each other, after the godzillas stopped being a problem, countries splintered apart again and quarrels led to them using their mechs in wars or some shit.

Entire animes are based on that concept, so it's not like they'd be hard pressed to make a movie out of it. They might even have to make (gasp) actually unique mechs for that, too, instead of 10 versions of the same idiotic bipedal punchbots.

Prequel would certainly be the easier option. I was genuinely surprised at how definite the ending was, since I assumed they'd want to leave it at least a little open for potential sequels. Even though there was a credits stinger, it was basically a parody of the usual sequel tease. Although there apparently are ideas for how to follow it up.
Guillermo del Toro said:
The main idea that we're bouncing off is the fact that Newt drifted with a Kaiju brain, and all Kaiju brains are connected. We say that. They are like a hive mentality. So, you know, draw your own conclusions.
It's interesting stuff, although I'm not quite sure where it goes. Newt re-opens the rift, maybe?

Make it both a sequel AND a prequel, interspersing scenes of badass robots in the past fighting kaiju, to the 'present/future' day where sequel stuff is happening. (the past scenes lending plot relevance to the present/future scenes, by way of exposition or embellishing upon different characters/mechs/or even abilities.

Now that i think of it, i guess kinda similar to how it showed the asain woman's past, to lend plot relevance to her character arc, or scenes at the start how they were set years before the 'main' events.

Considering this movie was a financial disaster I don't think you're going to want to see any sequels because they would get an inferior budget. So you'd most like end up with cardboard cutouts for Jaegers and blocks of wood with mean faces painted on them for Kaiju. I just hope they're still willing to give Del Toro decent budgets to make anything after this. Although it might do him some good to restrain him a bit as his recent movies have all been incredibly detailed worlds with lots of eye candy, but mediocre stories and characters.

I know people around here loved the movie, but it just wasn't that popular. It barely made back what it cost to make and it needed to make 2 times that to really be considered anything but a flop. I'd much rather not see a sequel with an inferior budget. Besides what made Rim exciting to the people that cared was that it wasn't a sequel or an adaptation of something, another movie would take away even that little bit of good it added.

Personally, I don't think the movie was a big enough improvement on Transformers to really warrant the praise. It was a dumb popcorn movie, but being slightly less annoying than a Bayformers movie isn't really something to get excited for or demand more of.

How about they make the next Pacific Rim movie animated instead of live action?

The story was fairly well wrapped up but there were some things that could certainly be expanded on or explored deeper. The politics and life of semi-apocolyptic societies, how they attempt to get back to normality now that the kaiju are (supposedly) gone and what happens to the jaeger program. Then there's the overreaching consequences of Newt and Gottleib's drifting with the kaiju - I too heard that there's planned to be kaiju/jaeger hybrids in the sequel and as Gottleib worked on some of the engineering for the jaeger (and there might possibly be some remnants of Gipsy Danger in the kaiju world for them to mess around with? I don't know the science of what happens after a nuclear meltdown but then the film wasn't big on scientific accuracy anyway) there's a good chance that the kaiju have the means to launch another, more pumped up attack - and this time, it's personal. :O

... having said all this, ItouKaiji's got a point, it's not made all that much money from the first film so don't hold your breath for a second one. :(

Where do we go from here? Now I am stuck with this tune in my head:

I don't really see Pacific Rim going anywhere. This one movie was fine, but I don't see the potential for another one.
