Maskerade. Terry Pratchett

It was the closests Discworld book. A foot more and I'd have to choose from the collection.
Bizarre! I have Maskerade sitting right next to me! I've just finished it. I'm going through the whole witches series now. I like it, but nothing can top the City Watch series.

"Contacting the agency frequently to track the request is a good strategy, as long as the line between persistence and obnoxiousness is never breached." The Investigative Reporter's Handbook, Steve Weinberg

The nearest novel is My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk: "Not in vain, however, did he spend those years over his worktable becoming hunchbacked: He always paid close attention to what happened in the workshop, to who made which exquisite page."

[P.S. "Speaker for the Dead" is an awesome book]
Yes, yes it is. Welcome to the escapist!

OP: "All that they are to build a mockery" - Dante's Inferno. That's the 9th line anyway.

Wasn't sure if the italics-bit was still part of the ninth sentence, after all, there was no period inbetween.

Nope, unless your book is different from mine.
I actually found the right line before seeing your post.

""What sort of ship are we in?" Asked Arthur as the pit of eternity yawned beneath them"
That's completely different to mine, but then I'm reading out of the Trilogy of Four edition.

"Meanwhile, the poor Babel fish, by effectively removing all barriers to communication between different races and cultures, has caused more and bloodier wars than anything else in the history of creation."

Wow, I like this one taken out of context.

"Protocol insisted that everything be made heavier than need be, so that it would fall, and capable of being degraded by ultraviolet light. But some people violated Protocol."

The Diamond Age or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer, Neal Stephenson

I had just happened to put this down to check out the Escapist. The second closest book, which I decided to check since it was rather close and I was curious, was simply: "Xar's plan was thwarted."
