panorama looks at games addiction

so the BBC programme Panorama on monday is going to broadcast a investigation on games addiction, i'm not holding out for games coming off in a positive light here as we usually know that main stream media are typically delightfully ruthless in condeming games, often missing other more important aspects like social enviroment and basic addictive personalities. So fingers crossed for an even handed fair report.

Im not going to watch it. I bet that the way they will talk about it will make me cringe. Come to think of it the only video game related programme on Tv to not make me cringe was Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe.

Their's too much criticism when these so called "experts" discuss video games on TV. Its always the case that many of these people giving out the criticism of video games know absolutely nothing about them and I expect a Panorama Documentary about them to be no different.

Why should I give them the benefit of the doubt when everyone knows it's just going to be the same old song and dance.

Why would the BBC then turn one of it's oldest and most popular IP's like Doctor who into a series of free games published on their own website, you can't honestly accuse someone of bias when you were just engaging in the same thing.

Panorama is generally a bit hit and miss when it comes to fairly assessing something so I'm not sure what to think without seeing the episode. (Hopefully they'll interview some actual experts though, theyre thankfully quite good on that front.) Also it's been getting a bit more 'tabloidy' recently, I think anyone who's seen it will know what i'm getting at here, so I'm not gonna hold my breath hoping it's going to be a completely objective report.

You're right about Gameswipe though, Charlie Brooker feels like a champion of games ^^ He'll make a programe about games and doesn't even feel like he needs to appologise for it ('cos ofc, he doesnt!) he's just so suave and witty and intelligent and *ehem, anyway*. I think we need more programes like it that just discuss games like it's just something else we get upto, like that book club show thats on in the uk atm (actually I don't know if its still showing) or like all the reviews and behind the scenes programes and discussions on sky movie channels, oh you know what i mean!

I'm not going to watch it but it'll be interesting to hear about what stance they took on it all the day after.

They're either going to pull the argument of developers making games addictive (hence developers are evil), youths are addicted to games more easily (hence video games evil to youths but ok for adults) or it just might show arguments of "Video games are corrupting our youth" followed by classic film segments with people saying the same thing about Heavy Metal, Rock and Roll and Television (people on the whole are stupid).

Yeah that's exactly what I am talking about. A actual documentation program for gamers by gamers and not some sugar-coated crap that many of the big name TV companies put out. That of which is destroying the spirit and image of video games in general.

I want to see better opinions than some middle age man who knows nothing about videogames talk about how much Videogames are destroying our youth and that all games are murder simulators targeted for fifteen year old's Its just dumb and as a avid videogamer it insults my intelligence.

That's irrelevant, their's probably many people at the BBC who don't even know that they have a games department.

well that was not my main point but it does argue against your apparent possition that the BBC must then be wholly biased (which my examples proves that it cannot)

unless you know which department oversees Panorama (doubtful) and that particular segment is going to be biased in the way you describe and thus the program cannot be anything other than one-sided properganda.

Well the little kiddies can't afford a PS3.

well I think its just how I feared really and that being a very child orientated documentary.

Kids can get obsessed with anything and it really doesn't show the bigger picture at all.

have you seen the pilot for a show made by yahtzee? (and his pals) I don't know if they plan on doing any more or if it ever got aired or anything but It's the kind of thing I think you mean. Plus it'd be perfect to see a show like this on prime time tv every now and then!

I'll probably catch this on iPlayer at some point 'cos I never remember to watch stuff live. I tend to trust the BBC to cover things fairly, maybe that's silly of me.

I've known about Brooker (and loved him ^^ lol) for years, I just said he 'feels' like a champion cos i didn't mean it in a kinda idolistic way, I just mean, he's the only one acting like an adult about them on tv, so i guess he is like a hero..
