What are the moments in games when you truly feel scared. I know alot of people are going to say all of amnesia. One of my moments is when I hear a cry of a banshee in mass effect 3. The banshee scares me. She can one hit kill you and is horrifying(moreso than monsters in some horror games). One was chasing me and I was just thinking oh mother of God please don't let that thing catch me!!!!

(SPOILERS for those who didn't play ME3 to the end yet!)

I remember when you had to send 2 rockets to a reaper to kill it so you could pass, near the end of the game. I had already killed 2 waves and was running low on ammo and had no medi-gels left. Then suddenly I heard a banshee cry. And then another... And then one of those hulking monsters also came storming at us! And half a dozen foot soldiers even! My first reaction was "Oh shit, oh shit! I'll never make it!" I was pretty scared of the banshees getting closer and closer while the other mobs kept me pinned down behind a wall.

Also, FEAR. Not the second or the third game. Just the first. There were at least half a dozen moments in that game where I went "WHAT THE CRAP?!" when alma or some demon decided to startle me again. Plus there were a few "Oh god...what's that sound? Something bad's going to happen...I dun wanna continue!" as well.

Funny, I never played Amnesia. I only played a minecraft mod that recreated a few levels of the game in it or something. And I already found that pretty damn scary.

I know it's been a boken record when it comes to scary moments but
The Cradle.

I had actually heard a tiny bit about it before getting there, so I was anticipating this thing the whole time.
The moment the level loaded I felt the atmosphere of unease. Nothing was alive, nothing moved. No lights, no guards.
It's a void.

Once I finally made my way inside to the inner area, and I walked up to the desk and saw the figure that darts past so quickly that you will have had wondered if you had seen anything at all. I fucking FROZE.

No me in real life, I sat in my lawn chair with my ice tea next to me, storm raging outside (yeah) and stared at the screen for 3 minutes.
I felt my mind actively telling me not to go any further. I felt true, unbelievable horror that night. I screamed, a lot. And I've never felt so much like a cowering mouse fleeing for my life.
I remember when I finished the level I felt a cauldron of emotions but mainly joy, relief and anxiety. My body was shaky for around 10 minutes after I turned the game off.

Resident Evil 4. I was at the bugs nest part killing them when a real bug flew from the TV and landed on my glasses. It looked like it just jumped out of the TV. I dropped the controller ripped my glasses off my face and ran like a sissy out of the room. I walked back to get my glasses and sat there for the next ten minutes hyperventilating til my hands stop shaking enough to use the controller.

Left 4 Dead. It isn't really scary in that I thought I was about to be attacked or something but it was scary in that I had just survived a double-whammy hoard attack (freaking boomer) and directly in my path was a Witch...which was startled when I realized a Tank was also nearby...

Tis the greatest game ever. I remembered to take the laxatives, but I forgot to take my pants off when I sat down.

Ummm... The most I've ever been genuinely creeped out in a game? Actually, it's not Silent Hill 2. It's Chapter 12 of Drakengard. Running around one-shotting giant babies is fucking nerve racking man.

The most I've ever freaked out? Doom. Hell man.

This made me remember how that game jumps of the cliffs of sanity and onto some sharp pointy rocks during the last quarter or so.

That is what happens when you hit the Run option. At the top will be a message asking "Who are you running from?"

Now go do that when you're in your room alone at night...when you're 7 years old.

For some reason if I am stealthing in a game and something spots me I hit the roof. It's very silly :p

The Resudent Evil remake.

Asking yourself "Did I burn that zombie after I killed it?" before entering a room you haven't been in in awhile.

Seriously, why didn't the Crimson Heads catch on in other RE games?

Alien V's Predator 1999.

First Facehugger encounter.
The marine chapter, infiltrating the compound all you can hear is a constant steady beep on the motion tracker... you get closer, closer still, fingers ready for battle ahead, you round a corner and suddenly its just a broken door opening and closing by its self, all that stress and tension built up is released you feel at ease, you go through the door and then BAM! the roof explodes aliens come out and the shock of it makes you jump so hard you miss the shots and get your face bitten off.

As the OP predicted, mine was Amnesia. It was the first game I played that I truly considered to be of the "horror" genre, Dead Space being more like a really neat third person shooter with a nice atmosphere that would startle me now and again.

I was mildly tense for a while in the early sequences of Amnesia, but not particularly scared, as such (scared being that full-body fight-or-flight response with excess tension in the chest). What really did it for me was the first appearance of the invisible water monster.

On a side note though, on my second playthrough of Amnesia the water monster was VASTLY less scary than the first time. Once you fully comprehend something, its scare factor decreases.

But the first time? Yeah. I was freaking out, at least in the confines of my head. I find it much easier to be afraid of a creature that leaves a lot to the imagination, and as it was my first playthrough I had no idea what the rules of engagement were as yet. For all I knew if I stood too long on a box, it would jump up and get me. And I had to figure out how I was supposed to get past it.

I would call it my first true psychological "horror" experience in a game. It was refreshing.
