first off i live in Oregon so the laws are written by apes and passed by blind old people ,southern Oregon's main import and export.

so my 16 year old brother ran away 12 days ago because my mom asked him where some rubbing alcohol was and he assumed something terrible in his little head. he once drank it to try to get drunk, my mom asked everyone so she would know if we needed more or not. so he snapped for no real reason and called my mom a series of names i'm to to sure i can say on the Escapist. ha also dented all 3 cars on our property. last night he came back through his window. me my dad and my mom tried holding him so we can talk to him. he threatened to kill us himself and burn down our home. He escaped with his drugs some cloths and his long board. later that morning he broke in again when no one was home. he tried breaking in by drilling a hole in my moms window frame. he failed so he kicked in my moms door breaking it and the wall. he stole back his confiscated bong and some pain pills.

we called the cops but all they can do is find him and bring him home and let us deal with him.

So tonight i'm extremely paranoid my mom took all of the sharp knives in to her room. i have a hefty rope so that i can tie him down. i don't feel like i can responsibly sleep until late in the morning when everyone else is up.

so escapists i ask do i have the right to be this paranoid and have you experienced anything similar weather it be the paranoia or a family member posing as a threat to himself or others?

First of all, don't worry. He's just going through the "addict" phase that my younger bro went through a couple of years ago. Only it was me that wanted to kill him. Nobody eats all the food in the fridge, except me!

Secondly, I can't stop straring at your avatar. It's hypnotic. Might lose myself into it some more after I'm done typing.

Being from the midwest, I had always thought of oregon as one of those highly progressive places where you can abort babies in the 141st trimester. Huh.

Fucked up family members, friend, every family has one or more. Chances are, you'll still be here to post tomorrow.

well he has been diagnosed wit ha few mental issues. he has no ability to feel remorse for anything. he also, like many of my distant relatives, can never let himself take the blame for anything even though there is diamond crushing hard evidence in his face. so this in my mind might be an issue.

what is your avatar from? it seems familiar but i cant put my finger on it.

also yes while Oregon poses to be progressive its only the northern populated area like Portland that actually shows progress. the southern area is really mid 50's old school when it comes to the authority and business.

First, starcontrol II.

Second... Progressive does not necessarily equal progress, but thats a topic for a different thread.

I am also from Oregon and I will tell you that that is generally true for at least the areas near Portland. Most of the Oregon population lives in Portland or cities nearby, but most other areas in Oregon are a little more conservative I believe.

OT: I have never experienced anything like that OP, and I do hope your family can get through this and come out okay. If I was in your situation I would be pretty paranoid also.

I'd definitely try and stay awake. Anything you can use as a "less lethal" weapon (unless, ofcourse, you're muscular and will have no problem overpowering him) would make you feel better/help you as well.

Best of luck to you, I hope he comes to his senses, but he probably won't.

Star Control 2, bitches!

Family members are fun, aren't they? It's always something...

Edit: And I would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddlesome kids and their ninja...

Don't worry, you'll be fine. If you really want to stay up, put on some loud music, watch a movie, just try and keep your thoughts off things that you're worried about. Everything will be fine, I've learned this several times in kinda similar situations.

Wow, I'm on a roll here with bad advice...

But still, you'll be fine. Like I said, I've had similar situation plenty of times before, and I'm okay I will eat your soul.

Surely if he's broken into your house and stolen stuff, the police could actually arrest him rather than just find him and take him home? I mean, you shouldn't have to wait until he does something worse for the cops to take notice, this is clearly a kid who's a few prawns short of a galaxy, if you know what I mean.

I think spending a night in a cell might clear up his head a bit, failing that, a good lashing. I might be wrong about how this kind of thing works, but you said he can't feel remorse, which means he knows what he does is wrong, but just doesn't care. So maybe if he got a real bad beating as a consequence he'd learn to fear doing wrong shit. But like I said, I could be wrong, that's probably the sort of training you'd give a dog, not a human.

Keep us updated because I am interested to see how this pans out.

My cousin went through a similar phase after his father died. My aunt eventually found him high as a kite on the roof of his father's house after his friends called her because he was threatening to jump. He was convinced (once sober) to seek help and is now much better, back at work and clean/sober. Had he not gone of his own accord then my aunt could (but didn't want to) have sectioned him under the mental health act.

But that was the UK and I have no idea how it relates to you, sorry. It might be worth finding out if there is a similar law in act in Oregon for people who are a danger to themselves and others and need professional help but won't accept it.

I don't think you're being paranoid, your brother has drug and mental issues that are difficult to control. Though I would strongly advise against trying to use a rope to tie him down! If he's threatening such things then I wouldn't be surprised if he turned violent were you to attempt to restrain him.

Best thing you can do is remain calm if he comes back and call the Police when he can't see or hear you if he starts to get agitated. The more panicked you get in front of him, the more likely his mood is to elevate as well. Also, if he is sociopathic, as it sounds, the more anxious or angry you get will just egg him on.

Good luck, and good idea in hiding all the sharps! Might be a good idea to hide the valuables as well.

He's got problems and it ain't the drugs, it's his personality, by the sounds of it.
The drugs are only something convenient for him to blame his actions on, really.

Gotta get him to get over himself, acknowledge his actions, stop lulling through life, semi-unaware and self-centred, just gotta help him "wake up".

This is all I can really say.

I would keep a baseball bat with in easy reach and if he breaks in hit right in the balls should calm him down enough to hogtie him.
