I quite enjoyed both movies. The first one in particular, due to budget, had to work with the simple truth that what you think you see, and what you are afraid you might see is worse than anything that they can actually show you. The subtlety of it, the earlier part of both films before the truth became more obvious worked pretty well for me. And I liked the use of infrasound (I watched the DVDs over headphones and, although I knew I was being manipulated, it was effective anyway).
I've seen a lot of "scary" movies and, other than jump shocks (and who doesn't jump when someone does the equivalent of sounding an air horn in your ear?) the earlier parts of both films did make me kind of uncomfortable. Yes, it resorted to jump shocks and I did jump. But I was feeling pretty squirrely through both films and always on the look out for the next little stunt - and pleased when it wasn't what I expected.
Prequel to The Thing. Hmmmm. Do consider John Carpenter's "The Thing" to be the best horror movie ever made, for the paranoia, for the mounting realisation of horror, the scope of the horror, the awfulness of what the Thing is, and for the wonderfully squishy organic practical effects. If the prequel remembers what makes it great, then great. If not...just go away with all the other poxy bloody remake/re-boots
