The parents of a deceased 27-year-old man are asking permission to use his sperm for conceiving their grandchild. Their son wasn't married, nor was he in a relationship. But his parents are now hoping to become grandparents of his yet to be conceived child. He died after an accident and went into a coma for two weeks, during this period the parents had his sperm extracted and are now awaiting the decision of Israel's attorney general on whether they'll be permitted to search for a woman to bear their grandchild. "If we were entitled to donate the organs of our son why are we not entitled to make use of his sperm in order to bring offspring to the world?"
They live in Israel, the world capital of in-vitro fertilization and a country that regularly pushes the envelope on reproductive technologies, this means they might actually get permission.

Somehow this just doesn't seem right to me. I have never lost a child so maybe I'm unfit to judge. I could imagine that you are devastated and heartbroken, but a grandchild isn't going to bring him back.
Also on the quote: "If we were entitled to donate the organs of our son why are we not entitled to make use of his sperm in order to bring offspring to the world?". I don't feel that they are the same thing, I mean organ donation is for saving lives, not creating them.

So yeah what do you think? Do parents have any saying on their children's fertility? Should they be allowed to go through with this and get a grandson?

The end result wouldn't be much different than adopting a kid, so if they can find a woman who's not creeped out then why not.

Well I was just wondering about it, I mean I find it quite creepy, but some people don't have a problem with it. Why is that? Is it the "he's dead he won't care"part or something else?
Thanks and I'll watch out for him :)

Well...CPR teaches implied consent if the casualty is unconscious. And they already have the sperm, He cant really object since he's too dead to care. So by all means if they can find someone who is willing to take the pregnancy, which is fairly easy I don't see why not. They do need to realize this isn't going to bring back their son though.

Maybe I should store some of my own away and maybe talk to my GF about this just in case something happens to one of us.

How was this sperm extracted again, exactly....?

On a more serious note, they do ask the donor to donate organs or sperm. They can't ask him if it's alright to use his sperm, thus I believe their argument is flawed in that sense. I see where they are coming from though, I imagine they really wanted their son to grow up and have grandkids they'd have visit them and allow them to see the next generation grow up, possibly for the last time before they passed, and it really is tragic that they won't experience that and my deepest sympathies do go out to them for it, but it really isn't right I don't think... I mean do they already have a woman picked out? And who would raise the child?

On the other hand, I imagine their son probably doesn't care. He's dead :/

Pretty much this. Besides if some famous guy died and had a bunch of his seed stored away I'm pretty sure a lot of women would be happy to know Walmart has a sale on turkey basters.

Who is going to raise the child, and, when he's older, he's gonna find out about this. I mean, its online. He'll probably be covered in the news. It isn't like they'll be able to hide the fact that he was conceived after his[her] father's death.

Think of how he would feel knowing that.

Its a bit odd espically for the doctor who had to take the sperm out. I find it a bit creepy but I understand a couple who lost their child to want a grand child at least

i see nothing wrong with this
granted its a little bit odd but seems ethically fine if the grandparents can raise the child.

In some countries it isn't necessary to give permission yourself, parents can decide on it, on the organ part that is.
From wikipedia: The laws of different countries allow potential donors to permit or refuse donation, or give this choice to relatives.

Maybe the keyword is anonymity, sperm/organ donation is anonymous, in this case it isn't.

I don't have a problem, perhaps the parents always looked forward to grandchildren, if they want to take on the responsibility, can support him (even after death through inheritance and such) and are of an age that he will be an adult by the time they are incapable then I say why not. For all we know the son may have wanted children himself once he had found the right girl and everything.
