[*does my best impression of said idiot TV council*] OHH MY GOD!!!!, THERE'S VIOLENCE, SEX, SWEARING, ETC. IN SCHOOL!, BAN!, MUST BAN TEACHING AND SHUT DOWN ALL SCHOOLS!SilverUchiha said:To Idiot Television Council
1: Games have a rating system (much like movies or music) to aid in preventing the more "harmful" material from being sold to children.
2: it is the responsibility of parents to know this rating system and monitor what their kids buy, rent, play, etc.
3: You are idiots.
4: Games are an emerging form of art. While it is still in the early stages of becoming true art, it is something you'll just have to accept.
5: I've seen more violence, swearing, sex, and so forth in schools than in most of the games I play.
6: Better parenting solves pretty much any problem you may have with the whole "Games are the devil" thing. It's also much easier to be better parents yourselves than for EVERYONE ELSE to have to conform to what you think everyone else should do.
7: You are idiots.
I rest my case.
Or we could try to make the shitty parents straighten up.Optional Opinion said:People keep bringing up "Parent more" "Lazy parents" "Shit parents" blah blah blah.
If these people are that incompetent to supervise their children when it comes to gaming then surely a law doing it for them is a good idea. That way children are protected even if their parents aren't the ones doing the protecting.
The idea is to protect all children not just the ones with decent parents.
Those Parents need to quite being Scrubs and GG at monitoring what their kids watch or play.Charli said:Parent more, cry less? I think applies in this situation?

You see these? These are on the front and back cover of every video game being sold today. They determine whether or not a game is appropriate or not for a young child. We DON'T NEED a law to enforce this kind of thing.
Besides, stores like GameStop are already required to not sell games that are M rated to minors. Unless a parent is there to buy the game for them. In which case, the employee will warn the parent ahead of time of the content within the game. Which is described on the BACK OF THE BOX. So if anything, it's your fault for buying the violent video game for them in the first place.
Honestly, it's just common sense.
Exactly my point, how does whether video games have first amendment rights or not effect your authority or responsibility as a parent. If you as a parent don't want your children playing violent video games then it is your right and responsibility not to let them play them.Drummie666 said:How the hell does this replace the authority of parents? You still have control over what your kids can and cannot play. Take some fucking responsibility for your kids and BE A PARENT."This ruling replaces the authority of parents with the economic interests of the videogame industry. The authority of the parents, interesting choice of words; because it sure seems to me like you're perfectly willing to abdicate your parental authority to the government by supporting this stupid law. It is your job as parents to protect your kids from anything you deem inappropriate or harmful, NOT your governments.Greg Tito said:"This ruling replaces the authority of parents with the economic interests of the videogame industry.

Excuse me, couldn't help myself.
Really, these parents need to shutup. No one replaced the parents' authority to watch what their kids played.
One wonders why it's called "common sense" then.Madara XIII said:However you seem to forget a good majority of people lack that mystical ability known as common sensescorptatious said:For petes sake...

It's ok the whole stupidity of the situation is baffling if you ask me. They're basically going out of their way so they don't have to monitor what their kids watch and play where as it's a hell of alot easier and less controversial just to not allow their kids to play certain games.canadamus_prime said:The authority of the parents, interesting choice of words; because it sure seems to me like you're perfectly willing to abdicate your parental authority to the government by supporting this stupid law. Sorry, this just blows my mind. Pardon me, speaking as a Canadian here, I just don't get this. Are these the same Americans who cry fowl at the prospect of government controlled health care? I mean no offense, but it baffles me that they'd balk at that but be so willing to let the government essentially raise their kids for them.
