Parents helping there kids through Uni - What do you think?

It'd be nice if tuition fees were subsidised properly, then it wouldn't matter so much either way. But as it stands, I'm against parents having to support their children. No-one should have to pay as much as people in the UK/US do for education, but it's sort of inevitable.

A good compromise would be to add grants for everyone, not just for everyone whose parents have below X income. Obviously poorer income families get greater grants.

Considering that unless you're wealthy as hell to start with, you're gonna be completely scraped for cash over your student life. Which means yes, you are going to need support.

I should know, we're poor and i'm going to uni.

The American Government expects them too.
There's something called an "Expected Family Contribution" based on your parent's income that determines how much government grant aid you get.

parents and grandparents putting money away for post-secondary education is a cultural staple in north america.

Of course. If you can afford to than why not? Helping your kid however you can is an absolute must. Nobody but you will ever help him.
