What single player games have party chat?

Or is he talking about NPC's?

Games played with steam running in the background, gaming while having Skype on.
Doesn't have to be build-in chats.

I think it would depend on the game.

If it was a serious game, I wouldn't be playing it while in a group chat, especially VOIP.

But I've never really had this come up, as if I'm chatting with my friends while we are online, we would normally match games with each other, to play together.

I definitely see how having one of my mates chatting could spoil connection to the narrative of a single player game though. Would be a game-breaker for me, but, as I said, this has never come up, as I'd just leave the game for later and play with my friend on something else.

Forgive me for singling you out, but was curious as to what you meant by that? Do you mean you didn't know that you could use mic chat on consoles or am I missing something?

I know mic chat is a thing I can do on consoles but outside of the 360's party...thing it's not something I know of that you can do in most single player modes.

I can see why it could "ruin" the experience however if the person is having fun I feel it doesn't matter. Back in high school I would do this all the time after school on xbox live. We would all be playing various games, some playing together some playing alone, and just talk about the games, life or whatever random crap we thought of. It was a lot of fun and made playing the entirety of Fallout 3 a bit more interesting especially since most of the people had already beaten it by the time I played and didn't want to spoil things for me. They would basically tell me about interesting things that existed but wouldn't tell me anything else so I had to search for them.

It doesn't stop being a single player game because I'm talking to someone. It can be distracting, sometimes even annoying.

Why would you do that? It's like being on the phone with someone who's talking to someone else. Awkward, uncomfortable.

I disagree. Obnoxious people ruin gaming but not party chat. If it's my first run through of a game that has story dialogue, then yeah I don't want to be talking to others whilst I'm playing. If it's a game without story dialogue and only visual dialogue or that I've played before, I turn the game down and talk to friends. As MysticSlayer said:

I guess your friend hasn't been gaming for too long. Getting together with friends to play singleplayer games used to be rather common. Even after we started getting more multiplayer games like Mario Kart, it wasn't uncommon for friends to swap controllers with singleplayer games, which certainly goes beyond simply talking with them. Party chat just offers a way to always talk with your friends rather than having to get together at someone's house like we used to.

So, in your short, your friend is very, very wrong.

Edit: With that said, there's nothing wrong if he doesn't prefer it because he doesn't want someone interrupting an important story segment, but saying "it isn't exclusively solo" is just not a very good point.
But I guess, it's to each their own.

Talking to friends will completely and totally destroy any immersion I had in the game. I enjoy talking to my friends and there are many games I can play while talking to them but I can't enjoy games I get immersed in like Skyrim(or pretty much any RPG) while im talking, I nearly always play them when im on my own.

Ah hah, thought I must've misunderstood what you meant :) I'm guessing he just means party chat in general.

Eh, I don't get as immersed in a game if I'm in party chat, but that doesn't stop me from playing a game with party chat on.

As for the quote well, as a child I'd play singleplayer games with a friend, it's still a singleplayer experience 'cause only one person is playing.

Sometimes I like the silence, other times I can't stand not talking to someone, even when I'm playing a single-player game. It all depends on my mood. Besides, if they want to play something together, then I can join in and have a blast.

I agree.

I don't like being in party chat with a single player game. Then either one of two things happen:

A. I'm completely quiet the entire time because I'm playing my game, rendering my presence in the chat useless

B. I'm talking to people and I'm not concentrating on what's going on in my game, which makes me want to leave the party chat so that I can play the game I'm actually playing

Some people can multi-task that way just fine; I can't.
Basically this. It's the reason I appear offline for my Steam friends by default. There's nothing that pulls me out of a single player game more than somebody chatting or talking to me. It really is one or the other for the most part. It's not as bad if the person is with me in person and actually enjoys watching the game (not that I ever expect people to just watch me play, but some people do like it.)

I love playing a singleplayer game while talking to people on Skype, Vent, Mumble etc...
I also like turning the sound down and listening to music or a Podcast.
Most videogame stories are quite bad so I don't care about "immersion".

I agree that party chat can absolutely ruin a single player experience. In some games I suppose it might not matter, but as soon as the single player is meant to have be any sort of immersion then chatting with others can and does kill the mood.

It sounds like it would take me out of the experince.
Why would I want to chat during my game session? It makes more sense to me to just stop playing and talk to someone if I feel like talking.

Party chat in single player games doesn't really bother me. Pretty much anything that uses steam or battle.net has the potential to pop up messages from people. I generally ignore it until I get to a point where I can see what they want and respond. If I don't want to be bothered at all then I just set myself to busy or appear offline.

If you're playing a single player game for the first time and are really invested in the story I can see why one would think that. However, if it isn't your first time playing it or you aren't that invested in the story then it can sure as hell be nice to chat with someone, especially if the person/people you're talking with have played/are also playing the game.
