No level cap is a great idea in my opinon, just needs to be handled right. For example no matter what your level, area's and monsters in those areas level up with you to keep up. Just an idea I thought I should throw in there.

It depends on the game as well as the ease it takes to transition from level to level. I mean, I am going through my second play at Borderlands as a Hunter and while I haven't hit the cap, the challenge is still there knowing there are stronger enemies than I and when you become "Uber God of all Creatures" and can kill a monster with a single head shot, it takes the fun aspect out of a game and replaces it with the grind quality.

Star Ocean 3 removes the level cap once you clear the main story, which is good 'cause some of the enemies you fight in the optional after-story only dungeons are insane.

Sometimes yeah, DAGRON Age for instance doesn't have a level cap and it works just fine. That said am glad fallout 3 has one, and many/most other games need some sort of limitation to keep things reasonable and interesting. And anyway there's almost always some sort of mod or cheat that'll let you get around a level cap if you really care
Yeah but there is only a finite amount of XP you can gain ind DA:O. Once you clear an area it is cleared forever and you can't go back and grind for more or force level yourself. Sure there might not be an actual cap, but the world runs out of stuff for you to do.

OT: I don't know, my Oblivion char is insanely high. I can't actually rememeber the level though. I can say that I once launched a fireball at a wall and it killed everyone aound it for like 20 feet in each direction without actually hittng someone. I was in town, it ws hilarious.

I would love not having a level cap for single-player, however I think it would be a good gameplay idea of the designers set "temporary" caps for the players. For example, on the first chapter the level cap was 10, so you couldn't just grind and be uber powerful and defeat the boss with ease. I think beign able to level up infinitely would be good at the end game, but not while you are still playing through the story.

Multiplayer on the other hand, this would destroy fair play. It's obvious that in MMO's the oldest players would crush the newer competition, so not having caps in multiplayer games would ruin the game.

Well in Mass Effect my character is lvl 60, so that combined with my Uber armour and weapons, all enemies tend to disintegrate in one shot... I increased the difficulty to compensate but all it did was make it slightly longer before an enemy died... Not particularly fun or challenging...

So some caps probably should exist I guess.
