I thought it was funny at first, but they tend to go way too far at times, especially in their responses to mail. At this point I swear they're trolling.

You realize this has been around for years, right? The argument goes like this: Someone says "Prove that the universe is not ruled by our almighty heavenly father, you dogmatic atheists!" and the atheist responds: "Right after you prove that the universe is not ruled by a Flying Spaghetti Monster."
Took the words right out of my mouth

I am a pastafarian, but I'm also open to, and accepting of, other religions.
I may trust in the FSM's plan, and his unintelligent design, but am very open to the concept of other deities, such as Cthulhu.

And pastafarianism is certainly nothing new, we even have religious texts. Check out 'The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster'.

ok the article from the BBC on the topic is really bad in that it makes the guy appear like a troll despite the fact that he is a very vocal activist for the rights of atheist, since the catholic church in Austria gets shitloads of money from the government that comes out of everyones taxes.

so basically he did this to prove a point, if a nun tries to take her picture nobody would make her take a psychological exam.

I strongly support this man's religious struggle. He makes me think I should renounce my Atheistic ways in favor of the one true religion, Pastafarianism. All hail the great Flying Spaghetti Monster!

When I read your title I thought to myself "Well, pasta is delicious ... so brilliant must clearly be the correct answer". The other half of the joke is that my thought was insanity for fake-trolling purposes, thereby hitting all three categories.

OT: I'd hope the point wasn't to wear a pasta strainer, but to bring attention to the oddity that religious head-gear is allowed to be worn in official government documents/files/licenses that serve as means of identification. The fact that they let him ... is the right thing to do, but also the wrong thing.

Ok. First-off: this is based on the guy in this article, so please read that, otherwise the rest of this post isn't going to be making much sense.

I'm mainly curious here as to what you people think about him. Would you say he's trying to make a valid point about religion, is he just fucking around because he can, or is this a good ol' attention grab?

And if we assume that he's trying to make a valid point: should atheists more often start light-hearted "religious" groups, or would that be too disrespectful towards the ones that seriously believe in one of the many flavours of deities?
More OT: What would his point about religion be? I didn't see him mention a point or anything in the article.
It was created as a troll (as in "Problem, Christianity") religion back when Kansas wanted to put Intelligent Design into biology classrooms. It is an insane, awesome religion. Beer Volcano and Stripper Factory, anyone?

Hey, if they offer free pasta at their church, I'm in. :D
They are supposed to, as that is what their communion is. In the book they talked about how they fed one person Christian communion for x amount of time, and one person Pastafarian communion. Guess what their results were?

Hey, it's kinda what I asked in the OP. And I can't really call the article bad when it pretty blandly states the facts, including the fact he's doing it as a reaction on some law legalizing religious headwear in official photos.
