Since "liking" Patrick Rothfuss's FB fan page (and why wouldn't I? I am a fan after all) I get his posts on my feed fairly often. More often than most of my friends and family to be honest (but FB's "news feed" is hopelessly rubbish with little chance of it being fixed).

Anyway, back on topic, as can be seen here on his page [https://www.facebook.com/Patrick.Rothfuss?f], he is an avid fan of our very own Yahtzee and linked to the most recent ZP video review. We also know he tabletops games and enjoys conventions. So why not an Escapist too, seeing as we're already a home to many geeks the world over.

Still thought it's cool though, when one of my fav authors enjoys the same sort of things as me. I've also been lucky enough to have a brief exchange (or two) with Jennifer Fallon, another author I adore, on FB through comments on her posts. Social media has really changed things in this regard.

So now we know Pat Rothfuss is a secret Escapist, we have another fun, celebrity geek fact to add to Samuel L. Jackson plays Eve.

We actually have a pretty decent sized list of nerdy celebrities. Vin Diesel is one of the biggest D&D players you'll ever find. He regularly attends conventions. Robin Wilson is the biggest fan of Zelda in the world. He even named his own daughter Zelda. I haven't done any research, but I did see a video with Selena Gomez admitting she played WOW. A quick search said that it's false, but you can never be sure. But it is always cool to see celebrities have some nerdy hobbies as well. I didn't know Jackson played Eve though.

Well to be fair I don't know it for fact but it's so often and widely said...perhaps it's a long running joke I assumed to be literal. But I thought it was tremendously cool that a great author (and fantastic human being) like Pat Rothfuss thinks Yahtzee's reviews are cool.

Didn't know that about VD, that is cool actually. I wonder what other celeb geeks we have.

I do know that Charlie Brooker and Dara O'Brien are proper gamers and their shows on the topic are great.

For all you know he could have a profile on this website and just prefers to hide who he really is.

Perhaps he could be masquerading as a duck and is hiding right underneath your very nose.

But that of course would be preposterous.

What would be REALLY cool is if all these people were actually regular posters. Can anyone actually confirm that Daystar isn't Vin Diesel?

It would be hilarious to find out that the guy who spent the better part of a year being trolled over his zealous devotion to Okami turned out to be Vin Diesel.

But i think he lives in the UK, so thats probably not the case.

Maybe one of the posters in the forums right now will become famous one day. Who knows?

Good grief, I hope not. Pat Rothfuss is responsible for writing the Qvothe books, a series I hold up as the absolute example of everything that is bad with Fantasy literature.

I'd go into detail, but if he does indeed post on this forum then you can see why raging on his precious novels is a bad idea.

Yup, here's an interview with him on Jimmy Kimble talking about it:

Yep, I saw that post too. Doubt he spends much time on these forums though; he seems like he's too busy to really be either an avid gamer or a forum regular. Great books does he write. Can't wait for the third.

I can understand not liking his work for any number of reasons, even if I don't agree with them. Maybe his books are overwritten, maybe they are just more schlock dressed up as literature. Maybe Kvothe is too Harry Potterized. Maybe the Bard archetype is played out or conversely maybe there aren't enough dragons and elves. I have heard people criticize him for not having enough world-building, while others think that is a good thing.

Does he disrespect the genre by deconstructing it or does he hew too closely to 'nerd gets the girl?'

There's quite a bit of space between Tolkien, GRRM, Stephen King, and Weis&Hickman and the criticism that could legitimately be leveled at any of them is varied. Whatever the problems of the Kvothe series I don't think its possible for it to embody everything wrong with the genre.
