Right just a heads up for people that don't know, but Path of Exile is going into open beta for this weekend. What is path of exile? Well its a loot grabbing dungeon crawler RPG (same genre as diablo series), being developed by at least some of the people that made diablo 2. Its going to be F2P on release and has a very interesting skill tree setup reminiscent of FFX sphere grid.

Now I realize that explanation isn't particularly good. Two reasons for this really. One I just woke up to the notification in my email inbox, and two I just started following the game about a week or two ago. So allow me to present TotalBiscuit's video on what exactly Path of Exile is.

If the above videos have piqued your interest or you've been following the game for a long time, well this is your chance to try the game. I know I probably will, at least for a little bit.

Played a beta weekend once. Eh, it's alright. Pretty standard, probably better with a friend.

Might as well try it out if its free, although I doubt I'll get it since I already play Diablo 3 and I don't really need another dungeon crawler game. Where do you go to sign up for the beta?

If you enjoy the terribleness that is Diablo 3, then Path of Exile will be your game of the year.

Been in beta since last year, it's pretty great. Though I'm quite burned out at the moment and waiting for the final wipe to start again.

Hopefully the cut-throat leagues will be available at launch.

Can I ask you then: how impactful is the sphere grid? I remember in FFX a lot of the spheres were just like +1 strength. Are there a lot of these or do most of the spheres unlock skills or something?

You can check it out for yourself here [http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/].

There are a lot of little incremental increases, but they're quite varied and for every five or so you can get a more substantial upgrade like "+30% elemental damage with weapons", so it feels good progressing. And there are about 20 Keystones which are really game-changing abilities like "Always hit, never get critical strikes" or "Remove mana, spend life instead of mana for skills", but they're located furthest out, so you can't have a lot of them.

Open beta? :D

I've signed up for the closed beta, but never got a key so this is good news. It looks like an interesting take on the hack-and-slack-a-thon Diablo formula, especially with the sphere grid and that your abilities come from gems inserted into weapons.

Thing is, when it starts, it'll be one o'clock in the morning in the UK, which means lots of time not spend playing the open beta for me.

That's good. That was one of the biggest worries for me, because if its like 300 spheres of +1-4 attack its seems like a wasted opportunity.

That's not too late :) Start the download, and go to sleep and it'll be good in the morning.

I'm gonna try depending on how big the download is. Those 35 gigs from steam sales game hurt my bandwidth allowance D:

Also the UI is really old looking. Plain ugly most of the time.

I've been enjoying it... I've avoided Diablo 3 on principle so far (Real Money auction house rubs me the wrong way), so I can't make a comparison there.

My level 30 witch likes runnin' 'round freezin' folks and summonin' all sortsa explodin' undead.

I'm not sure how I feel about the "Barter" based system, honestly. The wards from it are kind of "meh" and trading in a full inventory for two ID scrolls doesn't do it for me (especially since a frigging portal scroll costs *3* ID scrolls).

That, and I'm worried about how the microtransactions are going to affect the game when it's released.

I'm not too worry bout the microtransactions cause I think they said it will be all extra stuff that you don't really need (so I'm imagine like aesthetic stuff).

I agree with you on the barter system though. It feels weird. What I started doing during my last few hours of play though was just picking up magic items and up, and then inventory space doesn't become an issue really, and unided magic items sell for 2 of some orb shards which you can trade for quite a bit of ID scrolls.

I personally think they have to add a few things. Auto Inv sort (like from titan quest), some sort of trade window, and the ability to quickly move stuff in/out of the inventory and to the merchant.

You should check this [http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/15223] out before trading. You can get all sorts of cool stuff using recipes.

I enjoyed it, at least more than Diablo 3.

However I quit because the person that got me into it only plays on hardcore and I never made it past level 12 or so without getting killed.

The UI looks disturbingly familiar to Diablo 2's

Yay, another Diablo clone.
I'll consider it once they start including an option for proper controls: WASD for direct movement and mouse for aming and cruising.

Hey everyone, just letting you know that another Public Stress Test Weekend is about to start! There have been numerous improvements and additions to the game since the last public weekend.

I've been playing since June and what this tiny indie team from New Zealand has done has really impressed me. If you loved Diablo II and were disappointed with D3, PoE is the game you're looking for.

More info on the stress test weekend: http://www.pathofexile.com/publicweekend/

There will also be several events during the weekend, such as hardcore ladder races.

Some of the new videos showing interesting builds players have created:
