Damn... if you have that much distaste for a game like Sonic Adventure 2 (which by the way improved upon Sonic adventure, a game you seem to enjoy, in almost every regard to a large degree) then it just seems like the sonic-style of platforming in general wouldn't appeal to you. But hey, opinions.

The first signs of "going downhill" hit me at sonic heroes. A decent game, but rather disappointing compared to the adventure games. Heroes should've been the low point of the series, but unfortunately they didn't improve upon it.

For me Sonic didn't really start to spiral towards mediocrity until the shadow the hedgehog game, which not only completely shattered the appeal of several sonic characters (including the titular), but had some bad platforming sloppily thrown together with bad 3rd person shooting. Since that game, in my opinion, is when Sega desperately scratched at a rainbow of gimmicks.

I went through Shadow the Hedgehog without firing a weapon, except for bosses.

It was bearable, but it was nowhere near as good as even heroes!

It was an all around disappointment. Even the obligatory Shadow vs. Sonic battle, which was hyped since the opening cut scene was a cop-out.

This doesn't really apply since he didn't make the game...
"Sega's upcoming Sonic Generations looks like it's going to continue the recent (excellent) trend of quality hedgehog videogames."

He didn't write the article either...
I don't get what you're trying to say...praising a game from a series he likes isn't self-praise.
Raving about something you've done is self-praise.
Nobody gives an opinion the way this article was written.

This is just shameless self-promotion as the writer was obviously paid off to go against his true feelings or else he simply doesn't give a shit about Sonic.

Ahh, I see where you're going with this. I seriously hope the game is actually as good as he's saying though, I've gotta admit.

I know the article is meant to hype the game up to get us to buy it early but a little subtlety wouldn't go amiss...

IMO, Heroes was one of the last few acceptable titles in the franchise.

The others being the Advance trilogy and Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood.

The latter being in dire need of a sequel. >:/

OT: Looking forward to this one. Will get PS3 version.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
well at least plot wise it sounds interesting, but then again every other sonic game tried to be final fantasy and the plots of final fantasy for the most part, were pretty wacky so when you throw in a dev team that seems to want to be final fantasy and more so its going to just get stupid

Chonicles was great, but the game was too short... hopefully there is a sequel on the 3DS, it would give me a reason to buy the damn system! Street-Pass would make the chao raising MUCH better.

Also, I would love if it was a REAL chao garden, but i'd take Street-pass too, but a REAL garden?

Oh, lord, a Sonic article on the Escapist? Oh, lord, a positive Sonic on the Escapist?
"Perhaps I should look outside and see if the sky's not falling and the seas aren't turning red with blood. Ha-he-ha-he-har." /smarmycuntmode

Been keeping up on this thing for a while now, and it's definitely shaping up to be good if not great and the best Sonic game in a while. Everything looks sound gameplay0wise. All they need is some competent and challenging level design and they're in business.

Indeed! The Advance trilogy was awesome! Particularly the third one. Also, Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood needs more love, the story was rather good in my opinion. It's just that the sound and music quality was terrible. And lastly, we really need to revisit the Chao Garden. SA2's was the biggest and the best IMO. I wonder what else they could add...

Yep! Been looking the screenshots, videos, and other tidbits these past few months. Everything I have seen so far looks swell. I hope they are able to equal the awesomeness that is Unleashed and Colors.

Well if they return to their origin instead of pissing around in territory that doesn't suit Sonic at all then maybe this game could actually be pretty decent.

I saw the trailer a while back and thought it looked interesting. I'll wait for some gameplay vids before saying i'm sold though 'cause if modern Sonic means a Sonic that just keeps on running even when you don't want him to then i'm scrapping this one as well. (The seven rings was an ok song, but a god-awful game)

Despite some of the bad ones,Sonic does have some good current (and last gen depending on your sense of time) gen stuff. The Advance series,Rush,Colors, that RPG from Bioware. Sonic may not have had any hits lately, but he strives to greatness with these few games, and hopefully Sonic Generations will break the cycle of good game, bad game.

OT:When I played the demo,I wondered why there was no 3D section (In fear of another Sonic Unleashed incident where they only let you try the good part of the game) I'm happy to hear that this time, the game has a more Sonic Adventure style of gameplay on 3D's part.

WOO!

OH YEAH!

ROLLING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND...

*ahem*

Sorry, it had to be done.

That level alone warrants a purchase for me.

EDIT:

Who wants a video of the whole level in generations? Starts about 2 minutes and 30 seconds in.

Gazing at that image above reminds me of a certain other Sonic game, one which stands in my mind as the peak of the series, if not one of the best. I'm 100% sure that screen is a recreation of the sequence in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, during the City Escape mission where Sonic runs away from the GUN truck.

How could it NOT be that? I'm sold.
My thoughts exactly. I like seeing what I'm about to be leeroy-ing into, so I preferred it to the 2d games (yeah yeah, burn me later). With the added benefit of no treasure hunting, lockon-kill-repeat missions, and no chao racing. I might actually consider this.

if the 3D parts are at least as good as the daytime unleashed stages and
Colours Gameplay, then this is definitly going on my buylist, espescially if they add more obstacles and alternative roads.
while also tone down the pointless enemies, you can just dash trough.
as for the 2D parts...w/e i'll just walk right, should get to the end sometime, even easier with the auto-spin dash.

I actually prefer Shadow to Sonic Heroes by quite a bit. The level design seemed a bit better, and it wasn't as mind-numbingly repetitive. (Hero's is fun once, but I have no desire to play it four times in a row. Especially since level designs get re-used within the same levels)

Believe it or not, I'm one of the rare breeds of gamer that has not downright hated the recent batch of 3D Sonic games, the only real exception being Sonic 2006 which needs to die in a fire. Now don't get me wrong, most of them rely too much on retarded gimmicks and are absolutely nowhere near the level of quality they could/should have been. Yet when I sit down and actually play them, I don't find them as unbearable as everyone says. They're playable, just not memorable.

But I think the franchise is on the rise again anyways. I looooove Sonic Unleashed day stages, Colors was awesome, and I really liked Sonic 4. (Then again, 2D Sonic's don't have the same track record) Judging from all that, I really don't see why Sonic Generations would suck. I'm sold.

So what I would just like to say to all the people who refuse to play Sonic anymore, it's understandable but you should at least try this or Sonic Colors and see if you like it. All too often I see people bashing the series, and then say they haven't played any of them since like Sonic Adventure 2, or something. (Again, not that there aren't obvious criticisms to make regardless)
