Pay for Repairs or a New 360?

(Mods if this belongs elsewhere, please move it, ta!)

Right, so. Today my 360, which I've had for 16 months, decided to stop reading discs. It's been leading up to this for a few days by doing it once or twice (sometimes mid-game which was exceptionally annoying), but now has just given in all together.

I Googled around a bit and found that it costs somewhere in the region of £150 (if you include the inevitably massive shipping costs to send it to Microsoft) to repair a non-warrantied 360. I also found that for just £40 more I can get a new 360 Slim.

Which would you do? Pay for repairs and run the risk of getting some crappy refurb back, or just buy a new and (I assume) improved console? Really can't decide which to do. Seems a shame to buy a new one given the short time I've had my existing one, but £150 is alot for repairs.

(To all 360 haters I'll save you the trouble: no, I will not buy a PS3)

I would drop the few extra pounds for the new one, if you can afford it. I say this because if one part is failing then who KNOWS what else is just waiting to burn out the minute you get it back.

At least if you buy a new one you'll get a manufacturer's warranty as well as whatever hardware upgrades they have put in since 16 months ago.

I was leaning towards it myself. I have read some horror stories about people sending something off and not even getting their old console back! (Apparently they can sometimes send you an old one that someone sent back previously and it's a pile of shit)

Oh Microsoft *sigh*

If you have the spare skrilla I'd suggest goin for the new xCrate. Otherwise, just get it fixed if you have an attachment to the old one.

New one. Looks better.

And if the Refurb one goes screwy again, then you didn't save any money.

Build yourself an awesome PC for PC gaming! *insert annoying troll laughter here*

lol, I'm just kidding around. But seriously, from the sound of it, it's almost worth just buying that new one. I remember having the same thoughts when my PSP stopped accepting a battery charge. Repairing it would cost $80 plus about $20 shipping, or I could get a brand-new one for only about $20 more than all that.

I ended up sending it in for repairs. But in your case buying a new one actually seems worth it if you're getting a superior console anyway.

O I C WOT U DID THAR :p

I think I'm sold. I think I always was, just wanted a second opinion, I guess! Well, I'll give my current console a decent burial. After burning it in a sacrificial fire, that is. Elite, my arse!

Xbox on fire? Pics or it didn't happen! And, of course, you will have to send the pics to Gates with a note reading "Yes, this IS a threat".

It's annoying though isn't it? Now you have a brick of a console. You could always try selling it on eBay for like $50 with a nice big warning on it saying "Unable to read disks. If you think you can fix it yourself or if you just want to send it in for repairs, that's better than it just sitting in my basement for eternity".

Don't forget to use every part so it can be reborn in a new body to feed the starving masses, who knows it might be reborn into a good system like the ps3 or the wii, or a DS, or a PSP or something with a life expectancy. Sorry thats trolling, get the new 360 if you have your heart set on a 360, less likely to be a lemon

A new disk drive costs like $80. You're getting screwed over.
Ah but MS thought of that when designing them, it's all hardware locked so unless you buy their sh*t it wont work.

OT: You said 16 months, shouldn't all devices come with a mandatory 2 year warranty? That used to be the case anyway...
But if it started dieing get a new one, these xbox-es are really shoddy so the old one will just keep breaking and you will be pissing money away.
The new one will atleast keep you covered for a year, if lucky two.

Well I paid $80 for a new disk drive not three weeks ago so unless I've been hallucinating for almost a month that's how much it costs to get a drive repaired.

If it is out of warranty and is only a simple disc drive error it is easy and cheap to get fixed locally. at least it is in my area.
