Did nobody else notice this comment? I have to ask where you got your information from, because I've been following the 3DS since announcement and not once have I seen any intormation that says that the internal camera is always on. Maybe you're getting the 3DS confused with Kinect (not sure how you would, but that's the best I can think of), although that doesn't store or send any information outside of authorised game content (such as when you choose to upload a photo).

I always rush out to buy the console on day one :) I like to justify that I'm spending my money on enhancing the video game industry and that the profit margin will eventually enable the company to make awesome games for the console but that's just idealistic bs, im a fangirl and that is all :3
Fangirl maybe (I have no idea, not knowing you and all), but you have the right attitude. After all, if gamers don't support the industry then we don't really deserve to reap the benefits when it's doing well (ie, throwing out excellent quality games left right and centre).

Edit: Just for the record, people who think that this is a huge mark up should check out cinema popcorn - the bag is worth more than the popcorn that fills it.

I'm a little surprised no one else has mentioned this already but what about people paying this sort of money for virtual goods (the smurfberries for $99 comes to mind) where there are no manufacturing costs, very little development, and no distribution costs. That's 99% pure profit and people are still willing to cough up all the time for these non-existent products, I mean look at the hats in TF2.

Is this really a shocking revelation? Pretty much everything you buy has a higher price than the actual product costs to make/grow/find. They have to make money so that they can pay someone to develop a new product, plus as the article from the original post says there are lots of other costs. They have to pay someone to design the hardware and software, they need to pay someone to put all of the parts together, they need to design packaging, they need to buy and make said packaging, there will be large costs in sending hardware all over the planet, advertising and marketing costs, retailers will want to get profit too and they have to take in to account that consumers will want a price drop some time in the future.

If you don't want to pay $250 for a 3DS then wait for it to get cheaper or build your own. If it's only $101 for the parts then you shouldn't have any problems right?

Um, did the Kinect cost $56 to manufacture? And it sells for $150?

I'm not surprised at this. This is a fantastic example of capitalism at work, and if I was the one who figured out I could make a next-gen handheld system and still make over 100% profit, I would be damn proud of myself.

I does make you wonder, though how much did other handhelds cost to make? Like the PSP, or even old Gameboys?

100% is a fairly common markup on almost everything. If something is going to be in high demand, then of course the markup will be higher. Companies gotta make profits and keep shareholders happy. I don't see the $250 price tag as a huge deal. Honestly, it seems about right even though I have no interest in getting one.

And if you think that mark up is high....you don't want to see what they do to jewelry.

People who complain about this have clearly never run a company.

150% markup is virtually nothing. They didn't include the (massive) RnD, shipping and factory lease costs. This looks like a steal of a deal to me.

It's Nintendo's usual ploy. They've always over charged you for old technology and then stimulate sales later in life by slashing the price tag.
Yeah since only nintendo does it. Remembers the topic about microsoft's kinect costing 75 (about) dolalr to make and selling it for 150 dollars.

If you do not ewant it do not buy it. Me i am happy with my 3ds.

People always complain how, for example, Warhammer miniatures are so damn expensive. They're just little plastic men! But what they often don't know is that the process requires molds which don't last very long, and have to be replaced quite often. This pushes the price up. Plus of course the fact they're not doing very well, but there you go.
I agree with this point a lot. I hear people complaining a lot of the time, but a mate of mine works for the company and in a conversation we had he explained how the molds for a baneblade cost over 100k to produce (or come up with initially). Either way, it's a large investment, and the company has to make the money back plus profit.

All in all, it's worth noting that more costs than that go into it, and I'm perfectly happy with my new 3DS (which doesn't make me at all biased >.< )

Yeah, and then, additionally, it must be taken into account how they're not covering just for the molds, but for example, their workers', artists' and what have you's salaries, the ads, the designers and whatever.
Which is pretty much the same for the 3DS, I guess. Lots of people, manhours and thoughtwork went into it, and that all costs money outside the manufacturing costs.

@ Eri and all the other stupid little kids here:

How about you first grow up lern something about Business economics and then comment on things like this ?

100% markup is the NORM !
Many products have even more, like 150-200%.
What do you belive you are paying for when you buy a DS ?
The DS ?

No, you little kid without education.
You pay for the research.

Do you have any idea what it costs when you have 10 or 20 people, who are specialists in their research field, cost in a month ?
Multiplate this with years of development it takes to create a new console/handheld or whatever and you have millions of costs.
This cost must be paid, and that of course from the people who buy the console/handheld/whatever.

Also you pay for the risks a company has, like the risk of thef.
I'm realy sick of stupid idiots complaining about stuff like that.
There is no better way to show the world that you have no idea of how the world works and that you are a little kid, than making such a stupid post.
Basically, this guy says it much better.
