This will not end well, although I hope it gets built, he should build it under water so it isn't subject to storms and pirates. I can't wait to see that on the news, Somali pirates set new record for ship stealing when they captured a city and are ransoming it back. Those parasites will always get him. I hope he names it Rapture though, I doubt the Bioshock chums would mind the free publicity.

We need more people with extraordinary amounts of money to spend them on things like this. More billionaires would be happy if they had personal batcaves.

Though this article on the Escapist doesn't mention it, another news article about the same thing I read about an hour ago mentions how one of the things they're trying to escape by creating their own country out at sea is strict building codes.

They want to be free to use shoddier construction methods. On an entirely man-made island. Miles out to sea, where there'll be no one around to come to their rescue when the whole thing collapses.

I think this will be great for a laugh one day in the future. I'm trying to determine what's likely to destroy them first, a natural disaster, being attacked by pirates without anyone to defend them, or their city collapsing under the weight of it's own hubris.

My favorite part is that they want to shirk Maritime Law as well. It's funny, because the VERY FIRST LAW under the STCW-95 provisions is that ANY ship in a position to aid another vessel in distress MUST assist them. I am going to laugh SOOOOOO hard when it starts to sink and nobody comes to help them!

I will look forward to his inevitable failure then. He's probably only interested because he's tired of paying "oppressive taxes". If people like him just shut up and paid their fair share, instead of wasting all their money on ways to avoid paying up, something good could actually get accomplished, like a more balanced U.S. budget.

I want to see this thing ravaged by storms, and to see their ineffectual government ignore the structural integrity of their home.

Waterworld's production showed just how difficult it was to merely film in the open ocean. Stephen Spielberg came away from Jaws convinced that filming in the ocean was a horrible idea due to the difficulty and cost involved.

I can't imagine 1-2 million dollars even approaching getting this idea executed in any sustainable fashion.
