so the general consensus would be 360 controller wired or logitech dual action? Which of the two is easier to set up and is compatible with most games?
360 controller(if you use windows) is the easiest. Insert the thing, windows detects it, installs the proper driver and you're ready to play.

The 360 controller is guaranteed to work with a "Games for Windows" title, if that title is said to have controller support.(basically every game, perhaps the strategy titles are an exception) Other games that support controllers should accept it.
Thanks for your guys' help. This will make it so I can play 3rd person games like PoP and Prototype without it being jerky and clunky

I bought myself a 360 controller which you just need to plug in and its a go for most games, especially those which are console ports/multi-platform releases as the controller configue in the game is the same used on the console version. The only games I've had trouble are Crysis because it wouldn't let me set my keyboard and mouse as the primary control option and so had to unplug it, and the older PoP games but I think thats more to bad porting/coding rather then the controller.
Well the older PoP's were the one's I was looking at. Did you get it to work? Overall though, it seems that the 360 should work for most new games like Prototype and such.

Ok, I'm just not sure why someone would think a mouse is less accurate than a gamepad. There is a reason why 360/PS3 games have auto-aim, and PC games don't. Because PC controls, Mice and keyboard, give you the best accuracy.

Oh, and this is not Elitist PC gaming talk, that is just fact.

GJ with blanket slating however.
What are you emulating, exactly? A fighting game? Sure, I'd agree. Anything else? Nope.

I truly don't understand this. What do you mean jerky and clunky?

With an controller stick, you have 360 degrees for 3rd person walking, making it possible for diagonal and more precise movement. The wasd keys only give you forward, left, right, and back. This makes the movement more stiff and less fluid it would seem

I agree totally with you guys on this... for shooters! I wouldn't dream of playing a shooter on a console because of this, but I am not looking to use this controller for shooters, I thing that the analog stick provides smoother control for 3rd person games like Prototype and Assassin's creed. Plus with games like that, I couldn't see how the button mapping would work for a keyboard

1) If you have ever tried any emulated game using analog controls you would know why a keyboard sucks for emulation. Hell, even in gameboy, NES and SNES emulation a controller is superior.(L&R on places where they should be, buttons on places they should be

2) anything that doesn't require precision mouse movement is better with a controller because a keyboard only has an "on" and "off" signal.(run and stop)

From what I can remember, you couldn't really re-configure the control options on sands of time (not played in a while) and in Two Thrones, I had to reconfigure the controls every time I wanted to play.

I figured I'd throw this out there but there are a lot of "Mouse and Gamepad hybrids" that you could check out too.

So that would fall under customizing your controls, and I would be fine if I just didn't tinker with em and used the default?

Why anyone would want to use a controller over a mouse and keyboard for anything other than fighters is beyond me.

That is just it, I would be using it for fighters, 3rd person action. I LOVE my mouse/keyboard for shooters. I thank the people who actually gave me sound advice rather than attacking me.

Well, let me expand on your thought here, not just shooters, but RTS', and most other genre. I will admit, for PoP: WW, and Dead Space, I had issues with the keyboard, and used my gamepad for them. Yes, I can see where gamepads are more comfortable at times, but I can only think of Third Person games, and not all of them are troublesome, if not made for a gamepad, keyboard+Mouse combo can even be better, though I imagine that is still an oppinion based assesment for 3rd Person games.

Look, I don't care how much hate-mail I get for this comment, but besides RTS and a couple other games, I prefer my 360 gamepad over my keyboard. I am NEVER accurate mouse and keyboard setups. Their like Kryptonite to me. They are not inacurate, it just that your not used to playing with them with certain games, because your so used to playing with your keyboard. The same goes with me and a keyboard.

Digital (as in "on-and-off") keyboard keys or an analog (as in "degrees of motion")? When you're dealing with platformers, there's no contest. Even a d-pad is a step up. The mouse and keyboard controls are better for a few genres, but there are a lot of games that benefit from a traditional joypad.
