The 'PC Elitist' label gets thrown around a lot these days so I think its important that we have a clear definition of what constitutes a PC Elitist.

A definition of 'Elitism' from the Oxford English Dictionary is
-The belief that a society or system should be led by an elite
>The dominance of a society or system by an elite
>The supeior attitude or behaviour associated with an elite

Based on this I propose the following definition of 'PC Elitist'
-A person who believes that PC gamers are superior to any other gamers
-A person who believes that the opinions of PC gamers are more important than those of any other other gamers

Notice that this definition would mean that those who believe that PC gaming itself is superior to all other forms of gaming would not necessarily be PC Elitists.

What say you, Forum?

'PC Elitist' is kind of a slang term from the gamer lexicon, so does not necessarily have the same meaning as in the Oxford Dictionary.

Also, this thread is a tinderbox.

and yea unfortunately this sounds like one of those terms that can't be specifically defined, as it really varies between person to person. Trying to define it, especially with dictionary definitions, will most likely end up in a fight or two and some feelings may be hurt.

I don't think anyone really needs a definition. Most people understand the general meaning of the term, and you only need to get into specific definitions in formal debates

I think the problem is in todays current generation things are very console focused which is really pssing off the PC gamers because hardly any games are really optimized for the PC

I get a bit sick of the whole PC elitist thing and "dumbing down" for the consoles

you know what? when I look for a game I look for a good game[/B] not "is it optimized for my platform of choice?

I couldnt care less how complex the button systm is or if it has insanley high graphics or what ever

to me a good game is a good game and if I can play it Im happy

"PC Elitist" is just stamped on someone when they mention modifications, it's a sore spot that many console players face. All in all, both sides have a reason to exist. PC for some, console for the other some, it happens. Hey I'm sure there are "truck elitists" or "Heavy Metal elitists" out there so why not talk about them?

Was there ever any controversy about how "PC Elitist" is defined?

Seems pretty self-explanatory to me >.>

Oh gosh, here we go again...

OT: I would have to agree with MiracleOfSound. Slang does not necessarily have to follow dictionary definitions. Personally I would add to the list that you have there "believes that PC gaming is superior to all other forms of gaming", but hey, that is just me.

I personally have found that playing pc games are better in the sense that it can be more rewarding in terms of quality/potential/gameplay/re playability. I've had more than my fair share of console gaming but it doesn't stack up to what I can do with my pc.

But that's my opinion.

Hey now you gone and done it!

First off what you consider to be "elitism" isn't actually "elitism" it's caring about what we play. We RAGE because we care!

It's a misnomer. I know a few anti-console-ists, but "PC elitism" is really non existent...

First, "PC" is not well defined. It could include or not, laptops & tablets, linux machines & macs. It could even include consoles, which are expressly purposed for games, because they are computers and they can be, personal.

Secondly, elitism really only applies to people, so the term "PC elitst" would mean that the person feels superior to other people because (s)he uses "PCs." Not, which in practice it gets referred to as, the person thinks that "PCs" are superior to other game platforms.

What are you looking through Oxford for? Its already got a dictionary entry.

Really, this is just going to start a flame war and is entirely unnecessary.

I find it ironic that the OP's avatar is a king... I mean, your avatar is supposed to represent you in some way, right? For example, people can now guess my favorite game and they might somehow know that I happen to believe in the Enkindlers.

OT: There's not really discussion value here, you quoted the dictionary and there's no way to prove that wrong short of getting in a huge argument. However, the people complaining about games becoming "dumbed down" for the console gamers tends to piss me off and make me think of the person saying it as an elitist. Did we ask for these games to be dumbed down? Did we ask companies to make them easier? Did the people who should rightfully play these games (if a game is M, you're over 17 if a game is T you're at least 13) actually want them to become essentially point and click games with guns? (CoD franchise) No, all that is coming from the small minority of 12 year olds (and younger) that game designers want to impress because their parents spend money on them.
