So, I bought Hydrophobia: Prophecy off of Steam yesterday and I have an issue with it already: It won't start. IT loads up a menu to choose my video setting, then I click 'start game.' After I click start, the screen goes black, and then I'm back at my desktop without a Hydrophobia even running in my processes.

The game should be able to run on my PC, as I can run a few releases such as Portal 2
You have far better changes googling the problem, reading a troubleshooting FAQ of the game, or searching a hydrophobia-centered forum like this one http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=1124 , than asking here.
Usually this kind of thing doesn't take more than half an hour (one max) to solve, believe me.
Also, have you read the system requirements before buying the game? If not, make it a habit, or you'll be 'burning' cash sooner or later.

The first place to look for this advice is google, or a website/forum actually related to a game.

Games are complex, and all kinds of things can go wrong. Without knowing a lot of very technical details about your specific computer, and the game in question, this is difficult to answer.

Since this game is on steam, one thing to check is to right-click on it in steam's game list, select 'properties', go to the tab 'local files', and click on the button marked 'verify integrity of game cache'

As for updating the drivers on a laptop...

That's a little messy. It can be difficult, because laptop manufacturers are annoying.

The first thing to check is the website of the laptop manufacturer.
However, they may be a little lax with updates.

If they don't have any recent drivers, check to see if AMD(aka ATI) or NVIDIA (as appropriate) have drivers available that will work with your laptop.

If not, you'll have to resort to unofficial drivers:
(Try the Omega Drivers http://www.omegadrivers.net/ - They are what I've been using on my laptop, since the laptop manufacturer hasn't issued an updated driver, uh, ever... And the official ATI drivers refuse to install.)

At the end of the day, this is something you'll have to get used to. Even on a mac the chances of a game running flawlessly are much lower than that of any other kind of program.
Just be glad you never did this in the days of dos...

If I have to deal with IRQ and DMA settings or autoexec.bat, EMM386 or anything like that again, I think I'm gonna kill someone. XD

Could you please post your specs? I'll check if there are any compatibility issues

All files were in fact validated. So, that's good, I suppose. I'm going tovtry posting on the steam forum (if Steam ever lets me log in....). Thanks for the help.

Here are some indicators for you as a pc noob to use another time :).

My screen is black, but my sound is fine
First off make sure your monitor can run at the requested resolution, you can try and lower setting. To make sure thats not the problem.
Check your video card drivers make sure you don't have old versions, sometimes because graphic cards developers creates multiple drivers for the same series the old versions will be better, google it and you might come across something.

My screen flickers along with my sound/random crashes
Most likely your motherboard, normally this occurs with a motherboard that is either broken or cheap. Not much to do here sometimes it can be fixed with a trick but most likely not.

My Pc shutdown randomly when I play
This error can only mean two things:
your CPU gets too hot or you don't have a powerful enough power supply.

Everything is fine but after 10 min-1 hour my game lags a lot
This is the result of bad programming of either your driver or your game, the reason this occurs is because you have a memory leak and after some time you will run out. I had this problem in SC2 because my graphic card was broken. If this occur try having task manager on your second screen while you play so you can see the memory usage.

Now for true pc's the price of fixing these problems are not that high:

Here is a list of good replacement value hardware that took me 10 min to find:

as I am one ban away from perm ban I am not going to risk getting ban for advertising.(write me a PM if you want the name)

(case with 500W power supply) -48£
very solid motherboard - 181£ (a bit expensive but I have never had a PC this stable)
Graphic card - 173£
CPU(that works with motherboard) - 100£
8GB DDR3 ram - 90£
2000 GB hard-drive - 65£

I put these in to give an idea of how much it costs to replace.
