Hallo,

Having just got my hands on a new laptop and obtained Steam, I'm eager to be able to actually play PC games properly for the first time in years.

Can you suggest a good place to get started? The kind of games I'm looking for are strategies - I'm hoping Civ5 will come down in price, and I've just ordered Dawn of War II from a cheaper place. I really enjoyed the Command and Conquer games but I imagine I can get 6 year-old games for less than Steam is asking. Can you chaps suggest any cheap, good RTS games?

Knights of Honor is pretty good, although a little slow paced, especially in the beginning. It's similar in nature to Total War series, so if that's your thing you will certainly enjoy it.
The graphics are pretty old though, but they are still charming in a way.

Age of Empires 2 was recently re-released too, and is still as good as I remembered it.
Don't know what place for buying from shall I suggest however, other than maybe gog, since I don't use steam that often.

Company of Heroes [http://store.steampowered.com/app/4560/?snr=1_7_15__13] is pretty damn nice.[footnote]in case you don't know it: think of a realistic, smaller micromanagement C&C set in WW2[/footnote]
...for ?7.99, too.

And while I don't know about the systemrequirements/yourLaptop, the 2nd CoH is going to be released soon-ish (I think)
edit: I second below's mention of Ruse. Haven't played it myself, only the demo, but I remember it being fun enough that I'm installing it again right now - Thanks, below wombat ;)

Company of Heroes is problably one of the best strategy games out there. That one still has quite active albeit small competitive multiplayer community as well as excellent campaign.Company of Heroes 2 is it's sequel and that too is looking quite promising. Other than that there's Starcraft 2 that is quite popular. The older famous strategy games would be Empire Earth, Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology.I can vouch for all of them being quite good games.

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes just came out on Steam, and it's really quite brilliant. Check it out.
