7 is good but not essential, only upgrade if you're going to use all that extra power.

Vista is fail-tastic, 2k is ok - but stuttery, XP works, but DOS is better ;)

I don't understand the anti-Vista stigma, but even with that in mind, 7 is absolutely awesome.

GET IT.
Started using Windows 7 when I put together my current gaming computer about three months ago. It's freaking great. I was also using Windows XP until 7 released, and it gets my highest recommendation.
actually vista is far better, better graphics, better gameplay, and hey, even better games, you cant even play crysis on a windows seven. your better off with vista, since windows seven crashes alot, and over just sucks.
Is this bizarro world? I have Crysis installed right now and it runs just fine. Vista is full of a ton of extra unnecessary bulk that Windows 7 doesn't have. And how exactly does Vista produce better graphics when both OSes are DX11 capable? Nor does an OS have the capability to make gameplay better.

I've never once had Windows 7 crash on me yet. But when I tried Vista it crashed twice within a two-hour span.

You're talking out your ass to try and justify your purchase of Vista. It's a fine OS to be sure, but it doesn't stack up to Win7.
dont listen to him, he is lying, vista is better, trust me, I have it, it has great graphics.
*Facepalm.* Your GPU determines your level of graphics capability, unless you're limited by your DirectX version. Which isn't a problem for Vista or 7 since they both have DX11. Nobody I have ever talked to has claimed Vista to be better than Windows 7. And I have a lot of tech geek friends.

But at this point I'm inclined to think you're simply trolling, so yea...
Dude, have your geek friends SEEN the graphics on windows vista? have they SEEN the gamplay on it? HAVE YOU seen windows vista graphics and gameplay?
Lol there's nothing to see. But yes, I've personally experienced Windows Vista. Like I said, it does nothing to improve graphics beyond having DirectX11, which Win7 also has. It certainly does nothing to improve gameplay, but then again, neither does any OS. There are mods for that.

Even OS X is better than Vista, despite its lack of most gaming support. Win7 is the way to go.
NO NO NO, you did not say that OS X is better than VISTA, vista, besides having superior graphics and game play, is also the BEST platform out there! I mean just look at it! IT IS AMAZING, supierior coding, German overclocking, AND, it has a cool name, vista, not just a number, "DAR DUR DERP 7" vs "BUENO VISTA!! ATTACK"
dude, just because I have a difference in opinion you call me a troll? thats low dude thats low. You do know that people have different opinions right? or is that not true were ever you came from?

I only once regretted installing Windows 7 and that was when I realized I couldn't play Exteel anymore due to compatibility problems with its DRM. Still, it's a wonderful system. If you have the computer to run it then I fully recommend it.

All PC games no longer really support windows XP, if anything switch to Windows 7. It's Vista with all the shit that doesn't work taken out of it.

Is it safe to come out of my Windows XP shelter yet? LoL i was wondering what fellow pc gamers could say if I should upgrade or not. I held off on Vista cause well I heard it blew balls. so I was wondeing If I should upgrade to windows 7 and which version would be good? Im currently Running windows XP Professional.
I would recommend upgrading to Windows 7. Especially since more and more games will be DX10+ only in the quasi-near future. It's far and away better on the front end than both XP and Vista. I'm not sure how 7 compares to XP on the backend, but it blows Vista out of the water.

As for which version of 7, it depends on what you want to do. I like Professional, because it gives you the largest amount of options per dollar spent, but if you don't need the XP Mode (which the vast majority of users don't) or the automated backups, you could easily get away with Home, which is ~$50 cheaper.

Depends. Do you have at least 4GB of RAM installed on your machine? Standard 32-bit Windows XP can only use about 3.25 GB of it. You also get DX11 if you run 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista.

If you want to continue using XP, go for it. If not, go ahead and upgrade. There's little difference here other than personal preference. I'm still using XP, and everything runs just fine. When I finally decide to get a new hard drive, I'll be putting Windows 7 on it, but for now I'm happy with XP.

hmm, I would suggest creating two partitions on your HDD if you have enough space, one for XP and the other for win7

hell yes it is. I got windows 7 with my new laptop that I got for christmas, and though I admit I was used to Vista I quickly adapted and found myself loving Windows 7

YES! Vista sucked but for all those who still think XP is great...time to upgrade and be surprised.

I have windows XP and 7.

Do it. I've had no problems, and by dual booting XP and 7, I can switch OSes and keep all my old files.

Desktop seems a little clunkier, but games run faster.
I reject your clunky desktop opinion:

That's pretty sweet. I'd probably try and get it if I wasn't steampunking my desktop as we speak.

Are you going to upgrade your ram or do you have DX11 capable hardware?

If yes you may as well (or need to) get 7, if not meh, don't bother until you upgrade your PC.
I was actually going to do a full upgrade I was going to swap my 8600gt for a GTX465 and I think 2gb of ram is good but I can always add more.
If you are going to go this way then it is definitely worth the upgrade to 7, get yourself the 64bit version as well then you can add a heap more ram as well.

The important question: Do you want to play any games that were made before, say, 2005? If yes, definitely stay with XP. There are still many great older games that simply cannot be coaxed to work at all with Windows 7.

In my opinion, as long as you need it to fully utilize your hardware, go for win7 x64. It really is quite good though I haven't started tweaking it properly yet, mainly because it actually behaves well (and I'm a lazy 'tard).

I'd still put XP x86 over win7 x86 as the better gaming platform for older hardware though, requiring less tinkering on older games to get everything to run smoothly. That might just be my current lack of experience on the inner workings of win7 though.
