Literally the only way Microsoft would even manage to get my attention would be if Windows 10 was able to play Xbox games (even just original and 360 games). If that was a feature that came with the OS for free and no bullshit, I would look into Windows 10. Other than that, if they want to try and revive GFWL under some new name and try to make amends, they can go ahead and watch me continue to play games through Steam and GoG. Though if they did cross-platform play with PC and Xbone I might check it out because I have a feeling FPS games would be all kinds of fun against people on controllers.
Well M$ is already giving away windows 10 for free to win8/7 users for the first year. So I don't know that they really need more to do much more to convince most users to upgrade. Especially after win8.

I don't think devs are dumb enough to fall for this shit twice. A lot of them hated GFWL just as much as we did, and I am sure they don't appreciate needing to patch all the games that GFWL bricked since it died.

I'm honestly not all that concerned.

Console owners don't have to pay for Xbox Live either, they can get the free Silver membership if they want to. They only have to pay for Xbox Live if they want multiplayer and all the other benefits of a Gold membership.

PC owners won't have to pay for multiplayer, but that not the same as them being granted an Xbox Live Gold membership for free.

What the PC owners are getting as free as part of the OS license and what console owners pay for as part for a Gold subscription aren't even comparable products. PC owners aren't going to get free Games With Gold for example, or discount on Xbox Live games just for having a PC with Windows 10 installed on it.

Saying "PC owners won't have to pay for Xbox Live while console owners do" is either a dishonest or naive representation of the facts of the matter and the differences between the two platforms.

You could make an equally false and sensational point by saying that "Xbox Owners Get Given Windows For Free Unlike PC Owners Who Are Forced To Pay For A License!" when pointing to the fact that the OS comes as part of the console and isn't bought separately.
you're changing the goal posts, pc users get multiplayer free, while silver users do not, and even then, that's not including all other functions outside of gaming that you have on a pc right off the bat to keep the comparison within the topic at hand. "all the other benefits of a gold membership"...besides the "free games with gold", which even then, isn't that great, what other benefits do they get that pc users do not for free? It's been a while, but do they still hide netflix behind the pay wall, or do silver users finally get to use it too?

and games for gold is a relatively new concept that microsoft *had* to come up with to stay competitive, before that you were paying for multiplayer and being able to use your netflix account, which is laughable at best when you're already paying for the netflix subscription and internet.

They are not free games, if your account goes silver, the game stays on your hard drive but cannot be accessed. You have to keep paying for gold membership, they are free rentals not free games.

On topic: Microsoft needs to get out of gaming all together, PC with any luck will no longer even need them to provide the OS. It's too late to abandon the console sinking ship Microsoft.

They done it because xbox live couldn't compete with Steam if it cost money, when steam is essentially a slightly worse but free version of xbox live.
As for the reimbursement... why on earth would they owe us anything? They offered xbox live for a certain price, and we took it. Just because they make it free now doesn't mean our old deal is void.

Wait.... what? Since when would we be using Xbox Live in the first place? I must have missed something. Is this Microsoft's answer to Steam, or is it something that's actually going to be mandatory with Windows 10?

I think you're confusing Games with Gold with PS Plus' Instant Games Collection. IGC is like that. GwG is not. With GwG, once you have downloaded the game or even started the download of the free game just once, it stays in your collection permanently. Even if you have a Silver membership, you'll still have complete access to the games you got with GwG.

TL;DR - With GwG, you download it, it's yours.

Xbox 360 yes, XBone no,

Do you lose the games when your Gold subscription lapses?

Yes (for Xbox One) and no (for Xbox 360). On Xbox One, you lose access to Games with Gold games until you subscribe, at which point you regain access to all previously titles you "purchased" for $0.00. On Xbox 360, every game you add to your download list from Games with Gold is a permanent fixture there.

Xbox live for PC = terrible idea hopefully its ignored like it should be. If it ever gains any sense of popularity then expect MS to bring out their thumb screws and milk you for as much as they think they can.

I disagree, PS+ was great on the PS3. An optional service that offered a handful of free games every month, as well as an additional discount for digital purchases. Basic buy-club with benefits.
It depends on how you view PS+ now. I see that it was just a foot in the door for them to begin charging for online play. A bait and switch, once they have you subscribed, then they start adding "features" to your subscription. If PS+ had started as an online paywall, I doubt it would have gotten so much praise.

Interesting isn't it that the praise has carried over to this gen even though it is really just Live Gold but I guess that was the point of launching it like they did only to add in the online paywall later.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit if Microsoft added that "feature" to Windows Live 2 in the future, once they have enough people on the hook.

On the 360, the Games with Gold are yours to keep.
