Yeah I think there's probably a lot more people buying on-line from services like Steam. Those that can bear having their systems infected with benign "viruses" like Steam or SecureRom anyhow :p

Someone introduced me to steam and since never bothered with retail on PC titles.

Simply just say your computer can't run it then, and free game for you. You couldn't go in the same place again though unless you say you've upgraded every time.
I think the store might require some kind of proof, like an authorisation from the support team acknowledging the bug.

Not being able to run a game isn't a bug, it's just you having shoddy hardware.

I agree, stores are kinda stopping selling PC games because of Steam. It is a brilliant method for buying new games.

Read Masters of Doom. Or just ask a gamer over 25 who John Romero was, and how it felt to be made his *****. We all sucked it down(tm).
Oh you asshole. You know how much therapy it took took to completely squash the memory of that game?

Excuse me while I go hug a bottle of scotch.
Hehe. While the game itself was rather lacklustre and was released way too late with regards to engine and graphics it's actually Romero that was the main problem I think. The way he behaved and the Suck it (TM) thing really did nothing but garner resentment towards him and by extension, the game. I think that even if the game had been a lot better it would still have been savaged by some demographics.
It can be a problem when a designer gets as much coverage and profile as Romero did. Nowadays I have the same problems with CliffyB. Luckily I don't have a 360 so my exposure to his games are pretty limited. I did buy GeoW for 5$, played through it and to this day I still wonder what the fuss is about. It's a crap game in my eyes and CliffyB (or rather my intense dislike for him) may very well have contributed to it. Perhaps it would just have been a meh reaction if he didn't make it.

And in any case, I doubt PC gaming is going anywhere. I seem to buy more games now than ever before. Granted I don't go for blockbusters mostly but in the last few months I've gotten:

Hearts of Iron 3
Sam & Max Season 1+2
Empire - Total War
Killing Floor
The Path
Shattered Horizon
Torchlight
Trine
Uplink

And that's just from Steam. Retail have gotten me Dragon Age, Arkham Asylum, Sins of a Solar Empire (and expansion) and a new unscratched copy of Rome Total War. Gog.com have sold me FreeSpace 1+2, Fallout 1+2, Earthworm Jim 1+2.

That was the games. Now for the mods I've played in the last few months:
STALKER 2009 Complete
Rome Total Realism (and Europa Barbarorum as well for Rome)
FreeSpace SCP
Beyond the Red Line (FreeSpace 2 mod)
Wingcommander Saga (FreeSpace 2 mod)
System Shock 2 Reborn (and various texture, sound and model upgrades)
And a couple of Half-Life 2 mods as well:
Research and Development
Insurgency
Dear Esther (Still playing through that. It seems awesome and would advise anyone with an interest in narrative design in games to play it. Requires Episode 2)

In the same time I've used my PS3 only as a DVD player. No, I lie, I played some Bionic Commando Rearmed.

In short, I think PC gaming is doing fine.

As long as there's RTS, and mods, PC will be fine thanks.

Sure Halo Wars was alright, but it was honestly baby's 1st RTS.
