I would have to go with Master of Orion 2 or Civilization : Call to Power. Turn based classics that I recall playing at great length.

Also X-wing and Tie Fighter the best star wars games I've ever played. I still think it's a shame joysticks fell out of common usage.

Total Annihilation. RTS with robots! When you were 10, there was no better thing in the universe!
So freakin' true. Truly a classic that I will never forget so long as I can breathe. Hell, when I found out they released expansions 5 years after I stopped playing it, I went out and bought them without hesitation.

Between this and Ages of Empires 2 (which was the first in the series I played), I can't say which one I sold more of my soul too.

DOOM 1 and 2 and Quake 1 and 2. Still great fun. Although I can't get Quake to work properly anymore...

Back then those were the only PC games I had.

It's great to see so many classics mentioned in this thread, XCom, Jedi Knight, Civ. They all show what the PC is about, it isn't generic shooters, it's depth complex experiences :)

Frontier: Elite 2. If you search my posts on this forum, about half of them are responses to threads like this saying Frontier. A game in scale never matched to this day!

Dreadful graphics and a horribly unintuitive interface by modern standards, but the whole galaxy on one 3.5" floppy disk!

I dream of Elite 4 :(

This.

But seriously, LucasArts, put this one one Steam, and I can die a happy gamer. Lost my original Windows 3.1 / Win95 disks years ago.

Eh, Painkiller was 2004, I don't call that really old.
Of course Half Life is awesome, so is Deus Ex.
I love XCOM most of all though, that game was damned hardcore.

That game is the reason I made a GOG.com account.

For me it would be any of the Worms games, Dune RTS, and Age of Mythology.

For me it's the original Neverwinter Nights. That game defines my childhood and was my first proper RPG. Great story, D&D mechanics and the amazing toolset makes it one of my favourite PC games of all time.

Its when your intestines have a severe infection and you either die from the infection or bleed to death as a result of the infection.
