Have you ever felt that the Total War games had a totally superficial strategy mode?

Well, try Europa Universalis 3 (with all four expansion packs), or the newly released Crusader Kings 2. That should really do it for your strategy fix.

Other than that, I'm glad Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines has been mentioned already, because that game is one underappreciated classic. The graphics don't look overly jaded, but the animations do a bit.
