I'll give it a good look then. Any personal recommendations? I'll probably go with XP (because it runs faster, and I can't stand the feel of Vista [and, by definition, Windows 7]), and a rough mousepad, if that helps.

Keyboard and screen size don't matter to me that much.
If you're often away from outlets or don't like to carry cables, an extended battery is a good call. I like to study/write outside, and carry my netbook in a coat pocket, so I appreciate the ~5 hour battery life.

Al right, thanks for your help.

By the way, what American stores would you reccommend in particular?

No problem. Micro Center usually has good prices, and I think there's one in LA (haven't been back to CA in awhile). Fry's is pretty good, too, and they're all over California.

All right, Fry's and Micro Center. I'll remember those names.

Thanks for all your help.

Hey guys,
planning on buying and assembling my own PC. Just hoping for massive help. Tell me if these parts are compatible and then if you wouldn't mind making sme case recommedations (and other stuff if you think of any).
Here are the parts:
HDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319
DVD/burner/player:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151175
Processor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103675
Motherboard: (especially this, seems important and dodgy)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121383
PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
Videocard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121291
RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227290

I'd like a case with plenty of usb slots and some ethernet/firewire ports. Anything, or better components, that would prevent this from breaking would be sweet; its my own money.
How do I view warranties on NewEgg? Thanks guys, looking at this post I can see I look completely, ignorant(FLOBW), but I know a fair bit about computers. do I have to buy cables seperately?
Everything but the motherboard and RAM looks good. You're right about that motherboard being dodgy: it's an all-in-one setup (with a CPU and video chip built in), and quite slow. DDR3 RAM [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130228] with that board. I've linked 4 gigs, which is enough for gaming and general usage, but you can buy two of those kits if you want 8 gigs instead.

As for cases, you can't go wrong with the ones linked in the OP. I recently rebuilt my PC into a Cooler Master Scout [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119196], which I like quite a bit. The advertised tool-less design kind of sucks, but the layout, cable management, and cooling are great. Cables should come with your motherboard, though zip ties probably won't. They're not essential, but make dealing with the serpent's nest of cabling a lot easier.

Wow cheers man, I'm liking the ASUS motherboard; and I'm embarrassed about not noticing I hadn't chosen DDR3. Thanks man, I'll have to go down to Dick Smith and get some zip ties when I get all my money togethor.
I'm happy with all of this, two last things. Is the PSU overkill? And has anyone ever had any problems with NewEgg shipping (as in they ship to Aus right?)
For anyone interested this rig will cost me around $837 dollars including the rebates and cost if shipping three parts. So, when I get this rig togethor I'll send in some pics :D
Cheers

Wait, I just realised, is this in US dollars?
The PSU is a little more than you'll need for that system, but not obscenely so. Switching to a 5-600w of the same brand would save you some cash. I don't know if Newegg ships internationally, but those prices are in USD. If memory serves, Australian prices are a good chunk higher, even after allowing for the exchange rate difference.

Hey, just wondering if I need to be aware of any bottlenecks in the close future:

My current system specifications:

Motherboard: Asus M2N-E SLI, AM2
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, 3.0GHz, AM2
GPU: XFX GeForce 8800 GTS, 320MB (G80), factory overclocked to 560MHz
RAM: A-DATA DDR2 PC6400, CL4, 2048MB
Hard Drive: Samsung SpinPoint T166, 500GB, SATA, 16MB cache
PSU: Corsair HX520W, 520W Modular

1) Cop it sweet and acknowledge that I'm going to be stuck with an obsolete machine for the foreseeable future - very unfavourable, as you'll have probably figured out.

2) Build a completely new machine, with a new motherboard, processor, RAM, graphics card, power supply, hard drive and optical drive - completely out of my budget for now, and unlikely to happen in any foreseeable timescale.

3) Do a minimal upgrade, changing the graphics card and adding RAM, hoping that my power supply will be able to cope with the new GPU - the most favourable option, but will it work?

-snip-

So, I put the question to the Escapists: Is my upgrade path possible and reasonable, or is it a lost cause?
I'd go for the last option as well. Your PSU should power either card with no problems, and the X2 6000+ isn't that slow. It'll certainly be a bottleneck to a 5850, but it won't wreck the performance, especially if you manage a mild overclock.

You could also partially rebuild your system, keeping the hard drive, optical, PSU and case and swapping the CPU, motherboard, GPU and RAM. An AM3 770 motherboard, Phenom X3, and 4 gigs of DDR3 could be had for about the price of a 5850, though the new GPU will probably make a bigger immediate difference. You could compromise with a 4870 or 4890 and CPU/mobo/RAM upgrade if your budget will stretch that far.

Hey guys, been more or less lurking here for months and you seem to know your stuff, so I was wondering if you could help me with building my first custom PC.

I've been planning on doing this for years, but I've always been put off by the prospect of shopping for parts.

A friend has helped me get this far, but you seem to know more than him, so any help would be apreciated.

I reckon I can go up to £1,500 but I'd rather not, any extra pound spent is starting to tug at the heart strings (~1,020 atm).

[Edit] Started again. More powerful at a small price increase. Just under £1200 now.

Oh, also, quite an avid WoW player, I realise that it should waltz all over it, but given the issues I had with my Phenom in this PC, anyone know of any issues between WoW and these components?

Processor
Going for an i7 I think, should last a while. (guess you guys think it doesn't need stating, but better safe than sorry; all new processors are 64bit, correct?)
Motherboard
Think it has everything I need (although can anyone see if it comes with an SLI bridge?).
RAM
6GB should do, always got another 3 slots on the MoBo should I need more.
Graphicsx2
SLI seems like a sensible choice. Although I could get a single GTX 295 for a similar price. Also, more predudice here, same as CPU except swap Intel for nVidea.
PSU and Case
Think this should provide enough power and the case looks like it has excelent cooling without looking like an anime-mech. Also getting an additional 120mm fan to attatch to the empty "side" slot, can't figure out where the empty "middle" slot is though.(I think the PSUs are a close second after processors for confusion factor)
CPU Fan
I think it'll fit... just.
SS HDD
Quite keen on the idea of a Solid State drive for OS/Core programmes, I'll salvage any other HDDs for storage. Think this is packaged with all the mounting brackets I need?
current PC, the Media Drive (an external HDD, that has an internal docking cradle) (also, if anyone knows anything about this, throw some advice please :p ). Alternatively, anyone got an alternative Internal-External HDD?
Optical Drive
Cables
Think I need these, not sure those. Any other little bits I'm missing?

Looks rock solid to me. I only have a few things to add:

Motherboard:Though it doesn't mention it in the description, I think that motherboard is microATX. If you want a full-size one, try this [http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/MSI-X58-Platinum-Sok-1366-PCI-E-20-DDR3-1066-1333-800-SATA-II-ATX]. The ASUS is a great board despite the size, so there's no harm in sticking with it.

GPU: A GTX 295 is a tad faster than two GTX260s (the 295 is basically two 275s on one card), so it's the better deal at the same price. DirectX 11 is on the verge of release, and nVidia hasn't released any cards that support it yet. It'll probably be some time before it has any significant support, but if being on the bleeding edge is important to you, consider one of the newer Radeons (5850 or 5870). The 5870 is a hair slower than a 295, though, so there's a tradeoff beyond brand loyalty.

Hard Drives: From the picture, it looks like the SSD comes with the brackets you need to mount it (2.5"-3.5" converter [<a href=]). If you have an external hard drive, it should be convertable to an internal drive by removing it from the caddy it comes in. You might need a mounting bracket as some external drives use 2.5" notebook drives instead of the larger desktop versions. The cabling should all be SATA unless it's very old (3+ years).

Cables: Your motherboard should come with plenty of cables and one or two SLI/Crossfire bridges, so you can skip out on these. Cable ties aren't a bad idea, though.

EDIT: Okay I managed to fix my original problem. after that everything went finu up until now. Now I can't install my wireless card. I made sure that I had inserted it properly into the PC, but my computer doesn't automatically detect the hardware, like my manual says it should. Also whenever I try to install it via the CD I get an error message as soon as I try to select my language. The message says "Access violation at address 770B69D2 in module "ntdll.dll". Write of address 0042A545." No idea as to what that means.

Sounds like it's trying to write to a Windows system file for some reason. What wireless card and OS are you using?

Oh it's okay. I solved that problem yesterday. But thanks for taking the time to write a response anyways. And thanks for making this thread. I really helped me when I decided to build a computer.
