I bought GTA4 for the PC and it just doesn't run.

There's a thread on the forum now, called "How to get GTA4 running."

This is ridiculous! Is this a new kind of meta-game?
"Rockstar presents: How to get GTA4 running. A nerd's adventure."

Here's the thread :

^It looks like a nightmare^

Really, I've always been some kind of PC fanboy. Deep RPGs, deep strategy titles,
deep deep deep, bla bla bla

But the only thing deep I can find about these games today is the installation process.
Do I need to have a degree in computer science to be able to run the fucking game?
No thanks!

Goodbye PC! Consoles here I come!

Basically its just GTA 4 that is the problem. Other PC games are fine and face it, GTA 4 is not the best game around anyway.

I for one am back again in the PC Gaming business thanks to a MSI Gaming Laptop i won recently.

And while i see that (except for that 5 installations per Game DRM thing) most Issues people have with PC Gaming nowadays are not really that bad, i will still recommend to everyone but the most Hardcore Elitists to rather buy a console for gaming.

It's just so comforting that you don't have to mind about all the little PC issues and just play. Also, it is not like you are missing out on much Games or anything (you can still keep the PC for the Mods and the Games that just don't work on consoles). And playing an FPS with a controller is really not that bad....

You've decided to take the plunge, eh?

well lets get you started:

1) RTS's on consoles still suck, avoid.

2) You must to learn to swear much, much more. Intelligent insults will only earn you scorn/death threats.

3) You must remember that as becoming part of the "Console Nation" you must never mention PC's in anything other than hate speeches and bad jokes. Allowed terms are "arrogant pricks" and "gay", anything more intelligent and rule 2 comes into effect.

4) You may choose to join the sub-culture of intelligent/gay/female gamers. This allows you to go above all rules and enjoy games as you wish, though it is better to head online with another person so you can share jokes about fellow players, for instance:

"World at War? Looking at these chaps it's more like idiots at war"
"Quite"

5) Upon acceptance of intelligent console rules you must become as good as possible, they have sports, we have the classroom, but online is in a contested state and we must emerge triumphant.

For further instruction either read through the Escapists gaming discussion area or head over to Gamefaqs, depending on which route you plan on taking.

Have you tried following his steps? It might look like a nightmare (I think it does) but that doesn't mean that it is difficult. Besides his first advice (defrag your HD) is a very good one (must remember to do it soon).

I must also be one of those 1% users that have no problems with Vista or anything else. Gee, there are a lot of users in that 1% these days, it seems.

Yeah. Steam -> download GTA4 -> make accounts for Xbox, I mean, Windows Live and Rockstar club crap -> play.

Really, it wasn't that hard :/ Runs flawlessly, not a single crash, online is great. Woop.

Blasphemy. You'd better hide before the console fanboys come running with their pitchforks.

...He is right though, hardly worth renting, much less buying.

oh god, microsoft is trying to make PCs consoles. well, its off to the wii and ubuntu for me. ya know, maybe every company having their own DRM and making you register WITH THEM is whats hurting PC gaming. if you dont think you can do it better(and unless your blizzard and/or jesus you probably cant, if you think you can you obviously need a bit of humbling) let steam handle your multiplayer and DRM.

5000000 user accounts bad.

Yeah I switched from PC to console fairly recently for much the same reason.

You just reach a point in life where you don't want to have wait an hour for something to install, then trawl the internets for the latestest patches and blah blah. I wanna just chuck the disk in, open a beer and start having fun.

Man I remember back in the days of XMS'n'EMS having to rewrite config files to get a game working. 12 year old me was a hell of a lot more patient then 23 year old me that's for damn sure. Or maybe it's just that 12 year old me actually enjoyed having to mess around with all that tech stuff, like I was some kinda badass hacker or something. I dunno but these days I'm a console man and if they can some day pull off a half decent RTS or Flight Sim I'll probably stay that way for life.

This is why unstable games like GTA4 need to be banned from being released on computers.
Then we would lose the STALKER and Fallout games. :(

The multiplayer could give it some legs, if it worked properly.
yeah, but in the end it just made me miss something that was potentially awsome :(

Welcome to our ranks. Your headset and intolerance for other races will arrive shortly in a box cobbled together out of motherboards and floppy drives.
Hold the phone, by saying that doesn't that make you about as intolerant and narrow minded as your stereotypical console gamer?

And I do agree with the point the OP made, I shouldn't have to be a technological genius just to get Dawn of War to run on my computer.

I rarely ever have anything go wrong with my games on my PC. Sure, I have to install things, but I never have to put the disc in ever again because I'll usually crack them or, better yet, buy things off Steam. Regarding patches, is it really that painstaking to take 5 minutes to download a small file to help make the game run better? In fact, programs such as Steam and Xfire will even do it for you. But I do agree that if people have problems with PC's, then they should get a console if it's easier for them.
