You might just have to suffer through the PS version's graphics. Who knows, you might get some nostalgia out of it. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help, but it seems like PC FF7 just doesn't like to run.

Also, to all the people bashing FF7- stop. That's not what this thread is about, and you are not being constructive.

I never could get it to run under XP - so I've never tried it with Vista. The PC version was a bastard version of the original. At least as far as installing and configuration went. Even the music was changed to midi from the beautiful soundtrack the PS version had. Such a shame. I didn't know there was a graphic overhaul mod. I might have to look at trying to get it to run again with something like that.

I'm running Vista on an Acer Extensa 5420 (which I understand to be a recipe for disaster), but I'm pretty sure that it's not the computer itself that's the problem, for once.
Parts that suck have been boldened for reference.

Seriously, as much as I hate Acers, that should be the problem.
It's Vista. The PC guys can say what they like, but I've have had big problems playing some older games, not all, on Vista. FF7 is a pretty old game, and it doesn't surprise me it doesn't work on Vista.

I think you're screwed, but some others around here might have a work-around.
Good luck!
He's right, it's fact you are using an Acer and Vista kills older games :/
You might have to write out a patch yourself.

Yeah all PS3's can play PS1 games through an emulator. That's how you can buy and play them on the PS store

Did you try the "Chocobo Patch"? I have to use it whenever I install it - it originally fixed some bug to do with the Chocobo Races, but it also had other beneficial side-effects.

I recommend visiting qhimm.com, which hosts pretty much all of the patches and the mods.
Alright...Thanks, all...did this after reinstalling, and it worked, but I am now getting a black screen after selecting 'New Game.'

I shall resume my search later in the day.

I don't know where my copy of the game is, but hopefully you find a fix for your problem. I would love to have FF7 on my laptop. Could you post links to the mods you are using and the files to get it working?

Get the 1.02 patch...this is official, and must be done first.
After the choco patch, you can play it, but you'll need another keyboard. You can find two patches here for character model updates, which I recommend, and a few for messing with the music, which you just might want to do. Might wanna avoid the resolution one, though; it screws with the choco patch that you need.

Get the chocobo patch right after the 1.02. You can find the keyboard patch for laptops here, too.

HAHAHAHA. You want to get FF7 to play on a pc? Good luck. I had to threaten, beat, and beg my computer to play it. IF you ever get it to play fine, don't get too excited as the game may crash later on in chocobo races and a few cutscenes.

Getting FFVII to work on even vaguely modern hardware is a mission that'll take as long as the game.

Top tip: Use ePSXe and play the Playstation version on your PC instead. It won't have the higher resolution fonts, but the rest of the game you can turn up to modern resolutions.

Summon a meteor to destroy the offending Final Fantasy disc. When the game's natural lifestream gathers and attempts to heal the wound, manipulate the energy into your own body to become a god.

I like where this is going, but I do see a way this could fail. Whatever would I use to play the game once this is done?

There's a patch for that.

It's...almost working. It now starts, and I had the black screen problem, but now it's crashing during cutscenes...maybe this really is more trouble than it's worth...but I'm so close...

Yeah, that was a shame. However, you can download a mod that allows you to set your own soundtrack, be it a rip of the original or even a rip of the AC soundtrack.

I never had any problems with my copy on XP except for the at the chocobo races, which was fixed with the patch.
