We all know what those are. The epitome of geeky games that revolve around over-playing your characters and rolling a dice for just about anything while you keep score on your character sheet, most often on 2 pages (especially if you're a caster).

Satire aside - Does anyone here actually play pencil-paper games that remotely resemble Dungeons & Dragons or GURPS?

And for the uninitiated.

I've always been tempted to give one of these a shot. I actualy own the books for a number of different systems (and dice) but have never actually found anybody who would want to give it a go. I don't even know where one could go to find an established group (which seems like it may be the better way to go anyhow) other than the comic book stores, and those people do nothing to make me actually want to voluntarily associate with them.

I'm in 3.5. Not very serious rp but we mess around a lot and have fun. It's amazing how creative my friends can be with a fireball.

Who doesn't play Dungeons & Dragons?

Well, okay. A lot of people don't. But c'mon! It's the grandfather of RPGs. You gotta at least play it once.

I still own quite a few Vampire: The Masquerade books, but I haven't played in thirteen years. Last pen & paper RPG I played was HoL (Human Occupied Landfill) about six years ago, but only got to play once before one of the guys in the group moved away taking my books with him. Bastard.

Yeah. The new World of Darkness has inspired some of my friends and we have a campaing going on using the Mage the Awakening. We play Runequest every now and then, short campaigns and what not. D&D is not in our favour so much.

We did play a bit of Cybyerpunk 2020 something like 10 years ago, but it was just too old and didn't inspire us with it's (now way too unrealistic yet uncomfortably close to it) vision of future.

We also have currently a game of Blossoms are Falling going (it's a Heijan era Japan addition (as the people of the time saw it) to the Burning Wheel)

we are also planning on starting a Shadowrun campaing come fall.

I play primarily first edition AD&D; what Gary Gygax wanted DnD to be in the first place.

I played D&D with my bro and friends and it was fun. Though it was fun in the sense our GM made us fight a baby dragon (it was suposed to last the entire night) just to have one of us role 20 then 20 agian to kill it with his bastard sword in one go...

I play D&D 3.5 regularly with my friends, and I'm starting up another group with my uni friends to introduce them. In fact, I'm working on a campaign setting, complete with new classes.

Used to play D&D when I was at school but our DM transferred to a different school so the rest of us just stopped.
Trying to get a group together at the moment so I probably will start again when we get round to getting all the bits and pieces.

Only played D&D once, old Vampire the Masquerade once but am on WFRP now (the Warhammer system) and its a good laugh.... mostly because we tend to fuck around and take the piss out of each other when we play

I have palyed pen and paper RPG's but never played D&D

I have played Legend of the 5 rings, universalis, call of cthullu and BESM (big eyes small mouth, anime one).

I want to play more but my friends who I rp'ed with moved away :(

Its amazing if you play with the right kind of people - serious players play with serious people and the easily distracted play with like minded people.

i wish i could, but no one else will play with me. my isolation is a problem here.

as it is, the closest thing i can get to this is those fantasy books that you make the decisions in.

i die a lot with them.

They have never, ever appealed to me. Just not my cup of tea.

Each to there own though.
