i wish i could, but no one else will play with me. my isolation is a problem here.

as it is, the closest thing i can get to this is those fantasy books that you make the decisions in.

i die a lot with them.
Its pretty hard to find people who are not in Uni to play with in scotland - they can rp anytime without you. sucks!

Who doesn't play Dungeons & Dragons?

Well, okay. A lot of people don't. But c'mon! It's the grandfather of RPGs. You gotta at least play it once.

(3e FTW)
I agree but just saying 3.5 edition ftw, 3rd was straight up broken. Seriously using psionic preparation to be able do have infinite actions or just hasting yourself indefinitely is just stupid.

Occasionally, the most I've learned is that if you want to jump on a wild bull, you may get a natural twenty on your jump, but a roll of twelve isn't going to be enough to stay on the bloody thing.

I had eleven points in ride as well.

At least it looked impressive. Right?

I am currently playing in a Classic B/X D&D campaign. For those unfamiliar, think D&D with much greater risk of death. I have played a number of other systems.

My group was playing 4th edition DnD for a while, but we didn't care for the system. We went back the 3.5 Pathfinder. We are currently playing 1st edition DnD for sh*ts and giggles.

I don't play them as much as I like, because it's usually difficult to find time when my friends and I are all free to do so. That being said, pen-and-paper RPGs are terrific fun, especially when you're playing with good friends. That way, you can get away with taking the piss out of them. I'm playing a Risus campaign at the moment, and having a great time. Admittedly we've only done the first scenario so far, but I'm hoping the guy who's DMing will get the second one sorted in the next few weeks.

The epitome of geeky games
I think you'll find that's LARP, not pen-and-paper RPGs. Don't get me wrong, the latter are extremely geeky; but LARP is the one thing that's geekier.

I play primarily first edition AD&D; what Gary Gygax wanted DnD to be in the first place.
Interesting. Of the various editions of D&D, 2nd Edition AD&D is my favourite. Most of my friends think I'm mad, since most of them either play 3 or 3.5. How does 1st compare to 2nd, out of interest? I'd quite like to give it a go at some point.

We all know what those are. The epitome of geeky games that revolve around over-playing your characters and rolling a dice for just about anything while you keep score on your character sheet, most often on 2 pages (especially if you're a caster).

Satire aside - Does anyone here actually play pencil-paper games that remotely resemble Dungeons & Dragons or GURPS?

And for the uninitiated.

Yeah I play a free one called battleaxe (I am GM)
you can get the PDF off here http://www.16cbh.net/Battleaxe/
It isnt the best, but for free you cant really complain at all!!

I also play a white wolf one called Promethean: The Created, which I think has the best setting as any of the white wolf rpgs.

Some people fear being mocked for playing it - but just think its an adventure where you control everything (well the dm does, but just give him cheese snacks). And with the right storytelling and having a good ability to adapt you can go for 10-16 hours straight.

if the dm hasn't eaten all the cheese snacks

I was really into the old World of Darkness games; got my start playing Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and I still have a bunch of splatbooks (Werewolf, Mummy, Mage, Kindred of the East). I still want to play Mummy: The Resurrection at some point.

I also played a bit of D&D 3.5. Only a little...not that you'd be able to tell if you tripped over my collection of 3.5e sourcebooks (seriously, I'm not missing very many, just five or six off the top of my head).

Sadly, I don't actually know anyone who plays any more, and I'm kind of busy anyway.

I used to play a lot of Vampire: the Requiem, New World of Darkness.
Was quite epic at times.
Sadly I have not played any others, other than an obscure Norwegian one.

I tried it a couple of times, I played Dark Heresy and fantasy warhammer. It seems to be really quite fun depending who you are playing it with. If you are playing with boring douche bags than it is akin to torcher.

I'm in 3.5. Not very serious rp but we mess around a lot and have fun. It's amazing how creative my friends can be with a fireball.
Do tell. I've seen people be/have been creative with things such as ropes(down throats of course) and flares, but I couldn't think of any way to creatively use a fireball...

It's a bit simpler than any of the other editions, which allows a heavier focus on the story and character development aspects of the game. A lot of the tables and rules can get irritating, but not excessively. There are a few broken things in the game, like the werewolf system (even though they advise against using that system) and the large-scale battle system. But all that can be fixed with a little homebrewing.

All in all, it's just a simpler version of the game. I prefer it, if only because it was the first edition I ever played.

Oh, also; bards are completely overpowered in 1.0 and you should never let anyone play them ever.

I guess I'm a super geeky gamer then...and I'm damn proud of it. I really hate the life sucking, friendship destroying MMORPGs like EverQuest and WoW (never played WoW, played Quest for maybe 4 months, and Tallulah Rosa for a month or so). I have been playing D&D 3.5(I think 4.0 sucks and Wizards should have taken there time but they rushed out a broken system in the hopes of making money) D20(my favorite kind cause it's easier to relate to, but I still like a good fantasy once in a while) and I have just recently started playing a Star Wars RPG. For me P&P RPG are more fun cause you get to spend a few hours sitting around with your mates, eating junky fun and telling raunchy jokes while playing a great game, if you have a good GM and a good story. I am in a SW campaign that has been going on for about 7 months and it is awesome. Our group doesn't roll for everything, if you can reasonable do it with your skill sets then no rolling is needed, we save the rolling for the harder stuff like combat and specialty skills. I will always prefer it to any other kind of RPG.

I still play and DM, though I just got the 4th edition errata only a few days ago. My friends that live locally started with 4th and I don't feel getting them to use 3rd or 3.5. I always found it fun and it has never been dull once, but be warned people who are starting out, play varies depending on who you play with :p
