I support that idea too but in the PC world we live in nowadays.....Of course, the smart kids could just take AP classes in high school. Honors classes are a joke but AP really is that dividing line between smart and well......not.AccursedTheory said:No, what we need is a system that isn't afraid to call your kid stupid (Well, not STUPID).jdun said:What the public school system needs are school vouchers. Let the parents pick the school they want their kids to go to, private or public.
Ideally, the school system would periodically test children and place them in the difficulty range. The top range would be taught at the fastest rate, while the classes below would be taught curriculum in an attempt to push them to the next class level before the grade finished. Even if this does not occur, the fact that they are separated by intellect will insure all the kids get the very best education possible for their brain size, without the class being held up to make time for, lets face it, dumb kids (Whether by nurture or nature, a shit ton of children are just plan stupid).
Thats my vision anyway. I'm sure most would think its horrible.
Oh, I'm positively sure thats why.jdun said:It work because parents pick the right school for their kids. Fail schools should close down to save tax payers money.AccursedTheory said:6 minutes of segregation a day? SIX MINUTES! Outrageous!
...seriously. Is this REALLY a problem?
Interesting point the UCLA had though... same SEX schools seem to work out okay. So segregation of sex might work...

Six minutes of voluntary self-selection in an academic setting does not, on it's surface, seem to have a lot in common with the Stanford prison experiment.ApeShapeDeity said:This isn't just stupid or irresposible, it's properly dangerous!
There have been a number of studies done involving abitrary segregation. The results are scary. I can't believe they A) thought this might be a good idea, and B) Fucking got away with trying it! I'm offended on several levels.
Refer to these, and work out from there...

I don't think you understand the root of the problem. It's not the kids. It's the teacher. It's the public school system. The USA is second in spending on public education, yet our kids is rank mid to last on everything.AccursedTheory said:No, what we need is a system that isn't afraid to call your kid stupid (Well, not STUPID).jdun said:What the public school system needs are school vouchers. Sorry, have a hard time believing that. I had wonderful teachers (For the most part... there was that one we got fired, and our HORRIBLE spanish teacher), but we had quite a bit of simply stupid students, from 4th grade to 12th (If they made it that far. Many didn't).jdun said:I don't think you understand the root of the problem. It's not the kids. It's the teacher. It's the public school system. The public school system is run by Unions. They don't care about the kids. All they care is getting a fat paycheck and doing the least amount to help the kids improve.
Time and time again it has been proven that if you put a kid in a better school. The kid will improve.
It's not my opinion that we have a failed public school system it's a fact. It is not my opinion that we spend more money for less on education. It is a fact. It is a proven fact that if you put kids in better schools the kids will improve.AccursedTheory said:Sorry, have a hard time believing that. And even if we're to assume that the kids aren't to blame (Its a PC world, after all), I'd blame parents. Why?
1. Never seen a bad student with good parents.
2. Kids who get put into good schools typically have parents who care (Or parents rich enough to hire people to care about their children).
But I don't have kids (And never can), but I'll leave it to parents/government to fix this mess.
Apparently black parents that have money don't think segregation base on race and sex is bad for their kids. As long as their is no racial overtone segregation can work.phelan511 said:Sigh..... This is nothing more than a huge step back from the accomplishments we have achieved in civil rights. Once again we seem to like segregating ourselves into race, or creed, or sex, or whatever. Frankly, this is unacceptable. I don't care if it brings in supposed results, its wrong to tell a group of kids "You're black/white/hispanic/asian/etc so only study and hang out with a racially matching mentor." Its just..... moronic. Skin color, religion, class, or sex should not be a factor in how a person should learn. Everyone is entitled to a good education. Lord knows we need smarter kids here in the U.S.
btw... I didn't always embrace everyone this way. But the military taught me to see in either light green or dark green. I'm damn thankful for that now.
