I don't know if this is just me here, but is the Internet a cesspit of threats, anger and ill-placed sarcasm?

On YouTube and forums other than this one, I find a lot of hate floating around... not to mention stupidity.
One fellow on YouTube recently said to me "ma type ov english u got a problem deal wit it cause i can find out were u live n trust me i will".

Now, I'm not scared of a "man" who has "books r neeerdy" and "linkin park 4eva" written in his profile, but it struck me at that point (for the first time in quite a while) how disagreeable people are and how the Internet has allowed people like this not only to survive, but also flourish and feel entitled and empowered.

Tell me, fellow Escapists, have you made this observation? Have you had similar "negative" experiences(this was pretty minor, petty threats abound on the web)?

Now, I don't want to sound naive... I just want to know if other people experience things like this in great numbers or not. Perhaps I should just gotten to the point...

Definitely. I made a thread about one such occasion last night. Buly it's expected, considering the level of anonymity. Some people don't feel the need to be polite since they don't actually know the people they're speaking too, so they act like absolute twats.

Not to make us all sound elitist, but I like to think most of the people in these forums are above that. It's the only forum I've ever stuck around with.

Pretty much every website except for this one. Also; hate on haters... That seems a little off to me.

Well you can say whatever you want on the interwebz without much of a reprecussion. Y'know I could say that jews are responcible for all the worlds wars and the largest reprecussion is maybe I'll be suspended for 3 days or something. So where ever you go on the web you'll find a small bigoted racist, as long as the internet isn't cencored we'll have trolls, the best thing to do is ignore them and enjoy the internet.

P.S I don't think that about jews, it was an example.

Yes, the internet is quite literally full of these people. Part of the fun of youtube especially is having these little wasters make "threatening" comments towards you while you sit there safe in the knowledge that if they did happen to cross you in the real world, they'd be getting shipped home in several small boxes.

Ah well, I tend to just blank them, best not to give them what they want.

Who hasn't encountered this? The internet is the place where people leave their intelligence, respect, and any kind of original thought at the door.

I beleive it's mainly because many areas of the internet are still filled predominately with teenage boys and in general these kind of people tend to be agressive and attempting to assert dominance over others at any oppurtunity. The internet is a perfect place to indulge this form of behaviour without any repercussions.

P.S. I've been away for awhile, did anyone notice?

Can't exactly hug a guy who's threatening to find you in your house and... uh, do something indescript to you. Least of all over the Internet.

Kinda the problem with the Internet empowering haters, it makes more hate.

True; I'm pretty sure I've gotten more threats in an hour on Xbox Live than I have in my physical life.

A friend of mine from another forum has a quote in his signature. It goes something like, "A man is least himself when he has to answer for his statements. Give him a mask, and he is most himself." I think it applies.

Give someone the power to comment on anything (seemingly) anonymously, before they develop maturity, and this will happen. All it takes to be civil is a deep breath and the realization that the disembodied text your arguing with is the voice of a living, breathing, feeling human being.

Unless they're spam bots.

It's not just spam bots that can't comprehend, sometimes it's people getting a buzz out of suffering.
An unfortunate, but unsettlingly common occurrence.

The only thing that bothers me a whole lot about the Youtube forums is that people watch videos by bands or others that they already don't like... and then say bad stuff about it. If you obviously don't like it, don't watch it!
