I was just watching a review of Skyward Sword on Gametrailers and decided to look at the comments. Needless to say, it was filled with comments that make you question your sanity. The one thing that really stood out is that people were saying that the game sucks and criticize it at least an entire week before it comes out. Why on Earth are people saying that a game sucks before it EVEN COMES OUT ?

People were all over this site claiming skyrim would be GOTY a week before that came out. People often judge things based on pre release information. It's not all that unreasonable.

because if you believe a game or anything will suck dog balls you get the self satisfaction that goes along with it if it does. And when the game is genuinely good you are even more pleased with the game because you think "wow, this thing doesnt suck at all... this thing is awesome!"

I did it with Green Lantern and I cant begin to describe the smugness I was experiencing :D

The best one I saw on the GT comments on the Skyward Sword review was someone saying something along the lines of "Come on it's not a bad score [9.1]... I would have given it a slightly higher score but it's not as bad as you're all making it seem."

You would have given it a higher score? You know this without even playing it yet? WTF? At least those saying it sucks aren't trying to act sensible. This guy was trying to be the voice of reason and probably made the stupidest comment on the entire page.

Because people suck and they need to make others feel like they suck instead.

1: They don't like the style
2: They don't like the series (if it's part of a series)
3: They're sick of the hype
4: Their arseholes!

Take your pick!

[/thread] for the most part...

The real question should be: why ***** about a game when you don't like said game to begin with? Why invade enthusiast threads when you could create a "Game X Sucks!" thread and hope that your fellow Grinches will come to Grinch it out with you?

That's on par with a Buddhist koan, seriously. People will NEVER stop feeling that their opinion is so special and unique that no matter how disruptive or disrespectful or misinformed it is - it simply MUST be spoken.

I think the important distinction here is that they're not saying the game sucks, but that the game WILL suck, based on prior evidence. It's correct that they can't logically say a game sucks before having played it, but they can logically deduce that the game will not be enjoyable to the majority of people and particularly themselves.

And before you take the moral high ground, we all do this. When you go to a store and pick out your next game to buy, you will have to make prior judgment about the available selection and decide which game will suck and which will not. Unless you buy every single game - in which case, congratulations on having unlimited wealth and time, but maybe you need to consider varying your interests - you'll make a decision without having undergone the experience personally.

To counterbalance the multitude who are overly excited about said game.
Because if they don't 'counterbalance' the internet will fall out of equilibrium and explode. Also they are psychic but only choose to apply their powers to trolling comment sections on the internet and not winning the lottery / preventing disasters.

For shame.

My thoughts exactly. This also applies to real life.

There is nothing that says people can't have preconceptions about a game before it's released. However, there is a difference between informed preconceptions and ignorant preconceptions. For example, before battlefield even came out I thought it was going to suck in my eyes, but I based this off of trailers, gameplay videos, and the small time I spent on the beta. That would be an informed preconception. On the other hand, people saying skyrim was going to suck simply because a lot of people were excited for it is an ignorant preconception.

Both Skyward Sword and Skrim were up for Game of the Year awards before they were even released. I saw a lot of people voting for them before touching the games too.

Although I suppose people could go from the merits from the previous titles in the series for them.

What's the difference between saying they suck before release and deciding it sucks when you see it in the store and grab something else instead? I can't think of a recent example, but I won't be buying Dead Space 2. I know no more about the game than when it was first announced. All I know is, I didn't enjoy Dead Space. Extrapolating from that, Dead Space 2 sucks, for me. Similarly, if I didn't like MW2, it's a fair assumption I won't like MW3. Same goes for BF3, Arkham City, Saints Row 3, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, GTA V, Borderlands 2 and whatever the fuck else is coming out soonish. People usually have prior knowledge or experience of a game, even if it's just playing an older installment.

Yes, some people just say something will suck to troll, or because general consensus is it won't. But don't just call everyone who forms an opinion on a game without playing it an idiot, because we do that every time we make a decision to buy one game over another.

Yeah but obviously Mass Effect 3 is going to be shit right, it's so obvious Bioware wants to pile it into the ground and lose money over /sarcasm.

Yeah it does get annoying when people assume things about an ENTIRE game before it's out without good reasoning or evidence to back it up I'd say 90% of the time it's unwarranted but the remainder...you can just smell the fail, I think back to Splinter Cell Conviction and I smelt it then.

People judge games unfairly. Look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, people were saying it would suck and the game wasn't even out yet. People think it's just gonna be the same, when it wasn't exactly the same. People think that every game has to be different, like the case for Resident Evil 4. There's such a thing as setting your expectations too high.
