We all know these people. They might owe you a couple of bucks, but they never get around to paying it back, even though you constantly remind them. Share your stories.
My story has been going on for quite a while, but it was today that it truly pissed me off.
It all started a little more than a year ago. I had recently started working for my dad as a handyman. He already had two guys employed, Ricky and Markus. They're friends who live together. They're also a couple of years younger than me (I'm 29, they're about 23-24).
Anyway, I told Markus about the show Sons Of Anarchy. I told him I thought it was great and that he really should see it. He got interested in it so I lent him the first two seasons on DVD the day before his vacation. Only thing is, when he got back from it he was fed up with the job and quit/got fired (my dad was getting fed up with him for being lazy). A couple of weeks later, Ricky quit too as he wasn't getting along with my dad.
After they quit and got their final paychecks they claimed that my dad had stiffed them on their pay. They had some powertools and told my dad that they refused to return them until they got their money. My dad told them that if they could prove that he owed them money he would gladly pay them. They couldn't, because he didn't owe them anything. This continued until my dad talked to Ricky's mom (they've known each other for at least 20 years) and she made him return them. My dad asked me to meet with Ricky as he didn't want to get in a argument with him. I met up with Ricky (this was in November last year) and got the tools while we had a friendly chat. We weren't pissed at each other, we both realized that this thing was between them.
Fast-forward to March and I felt that I wanted my DVD's back. I texted Ricky and asked if we could meet up sometime. He replied that it wasn't a problem. Now, I never got back to him (it slipped my mind) until a month later when I texted him again asking for my DVD's and the rims and tires to my car. I never got a reply from him.
Why did he have my rims and tires you might ask? Well, about two years ago it was my dads car and he was looking to sell it. Ricky was interested in it and lent it, wanting to test it for a while before buying it. He never bought it and returned the car to my dad with the snowtires on it. The other tires and rims he forgot at his place. Fast-forward to last summer and I bought the car from my dad, which naturally also included the rims and tires that was at Ricky's place.
But, as you already know, when I contacted Ricky about them he never replied. I tried calling him and texting him for about two months and never got hold of him. I didn't get it, why was he avoiding me? I hadn't done anything to him and the last time we talked it was all friendly.
Let's fast-forward again, until two days ago. Me and my dad was just getting back to work when we bumped into Ricky. My dad didn't see him, but Ricky sure saw us. The look on his face said it all: "how can I be so fucking unlucky that I run into them here?" I considered talking to Ricky about my stuff, but decided against it. If we had started talking then and there my dad would've gotten involved (and probably he would've gotten pretty angry). So, out of respect to Ricky, I didn't say anything about it, I just gave him a friendly hello which he replied to.
Today, I guess I was in a foul mood. My hope had been that Ricky would contact me after we bumped into each other, but he never did. You should note that all my previous texts to Ricky have been very civil. I've asked him nicely to contact me every time because I genuinely believe that if you're nice to people they will be nice back. But now I was angry and tired of being nice. I texted him the following (roughly translated):
"Could you give me a call? I was nice enough not to bring it up when dad was there, then you could be nice enough to give me my stuff back." I didn't expect a reply, but it only took one minute to get this:
"What do you mean by that? You think I care if he's there? He's not really intimidating." This didn't improve my mood in any way, but I kept a somewhat cool head and replied:
"What does that have to do with my stuff? I don't understand how I got mixed up in your shit with my dad, I just want my stuff back."
He never replied after that. I'm pretty sure why he's been avoiding me. It's not because he's been mad at me, it's because he has probably sold the rims. He figured they where still my dads and decided to make some money off them. But when I told him they where mine he panicked and just tried to ignore me. It's all speculation, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. Next step is Ricky's mother. I'll talk to her and see if she can help me with this, since talking to Ricky isn't leading anywhere
Man, that became quite the rant. Feels better now to be honest.
