Okay. All I wanna know is...

Why the hell do people ***** about Square Enix so much?

They complain about how Final Fantasy has 14 base installments, how they decided to pursue the asshole who is trying to jeopardize their game because they faked their identity to get it, and their games in general.

I can get how Kane and Lynch 2 would suck, but I get the feeling that most of that hate comes from people who don't understand the point of JRPG's. They make great games. If you don't like it, piss off and go away. They've had some issues this year, and sure, 14 isn't going too well but it's a work in progress. WoW wasn't made in a fucking day.

Point is, why do people complain about them? It's the one thing that irritates me about Yahtzee and IGN and Gamespot and all of those gaming sites based in America or otherwise.

What's with being this defensive about Square Enix? Do you get personally offended when someone criticises them?

They suck, therefore people criticise and complain about them. You may think it's a sad waste of life, but that's where you can buzz off or try to refute the arguments people put forth.
It's not that I get personally offended, but people don't give a good reason to complain. People didn't complain when Just Cause 2 came out but they'll go straight to insult them with their JRPGs.

Square Enix used to make great games. They've just given up on that part over much of the last decade in favor of cow towing to investors. You don't release a broken MMO, apologize by making it free to play, albeit temporarily, just to meet a release date that was handed down to you from the top. For an MMO to get off the ground, it has to suck as many people in as possible, and population goes from a hurdle to an impossibility after you screw up as badly as they did. Who else squanders tens of millions of dollars on such a known failure? Their piss poor rehashes of side-FF7 stories didn't do justice to the decent game that it was, and they're never going to go back and strike gold like they did with FF6/9. Just face it, they're full of themselves, over-bloated, under-preforming, taking an industry name that was dominate for a decade or a decade and a half, and then crushing it with modern failure after failure.

First of all, addressing your tangent, it is Yahtzee's job to point out, criticize, and ***** about every little thing he finds in a game/the company that developed said game/the publishers who published said game.

Now then, on-topic: I don't ***** about Square Enix, I ***** about the sub-par games that they release. So far, the only thing I actually have a reason to ***** about is Final Fantasy XIII, because I've never played any of the Kane & Lynch games. But seeing as how I have enjoyed every Final Fantasy game (save for XI and XIV because I haven't played them) I think I have as much right as anyone to ***** about the fact that after ten hours into the game, I still had no clue of what was happening in the story, how the characters related to the story, and why I should care about them.

Hope was an absolutely terrible character (I don't care how much "better" he might get later in the game), Lightning was neat but even more of a ***** than Cloud, Vanille was...I'll be charitable and stop right there, Snow was a huge pile of unrelatable man-stereotypes, and Sazh was...well, I liked Sazh. EDIT: Oh, and the last chick who joins your party? Yeah, ten hours in to the game and we had barely even seen her as an aside in part of Snow's story.

Getting all of the hate for Final Fantasy XIII aside, I actually like many of Squeenix's other games (Either ones they've developed internally or published): The rest of the FF series, Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, Grandia, Chrono Trigger, they also helped to distribute Batman: Arkham Asylum, COD: Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2 and BlOPs, they'll be publishing Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and they published Just Cause 2.

So to put it simply, I don't hate Square Enix. I hate Final Fantasy XIII. EDIT: And what it and Final Fantasy XIV may represent for the future of the company.

Well the complaint is pretty much deserved. They are completely out of touch with their audience and they do things to please their customer base that Ray Charles could see would only piss their customers off.

A perfect example in my mind is Nier. Not a bad game mind you, but this game was supposed to be SEs attempt at catering to the western audience. However their attempt of catering to a western audience was making a flat uninspired protagonist with actual muscle definition. The problem is underneath that one facet of "catering" still lies the same cultural based aesthetics that western audiences were complaining about in the first place. So it becomes an issue of "We tell you what you like, Prease."

On the court case do you not see its begging for ridicule when the company sues user names without knowing who they are suing, and paying more money in lawyers fees than they will ever be able to make back from the litigation. That would not be that big of a problem except that the leak actually BENEFITs them.

So.. I mean I do understand, Square Enix does in fact earn more hatred than they are actually due. But the hatred is not entirely without provocation.

Squaresoft was a great company, Enix was a great company... both made excellent games throughout the 16-bit era and the 32/64-bit era.
After they merged in 2003, I think they started going slowly downhill. They still make new IPs once in awhile that have something to offer, but the best releases from all of their old staple IPs are remakes of 90s games for handhelds.

So, I don't hate 'em, and I don't understand the irrational hate for 'em... but they are a bit disappointing for someone who grew up on 'em as competitors.

My thing about Yahtzee was honestly a pety complaint. XD. Yahtzee gives me something to look forward to.

XIII doesn't deserve as much hate that it gets. 10 hours in and I was able to keep track of everything. Yeah, it was different, but trial and error. In Versus XIII they're changing the battle system. People try different things and it doesn't always work. Fuck, 12's obviously didn't fucking work and still makes me pissed even though I gave the game to my friend and punch my other friend in the arm every time he even MENTIONS the fucking game......

By the way, Fang. She's epic as time goes on.

I won't argue with you that some people are too livid when they argue against games they hate, I get the same way. I presented to you my opinion of why I didn't like Final Fantasy XIII. It's cool if you could follow the story, my best friend loved the game, I don't mind if you like something I don't like. But for me personally, I would probably need to sit down and play the game without any breaks to be able to follow the story and unfortunately, it's just not a game that keeps me interested enough to want to do that.

I'm not saying that the other Final Fantasies have been easier to follow, and arguably the story of XII was miles worse than XIII*, but to me the other games have always been engaging enough in a way that XIII just lacked. It may have been how linear the game was, it may have been the combat system, it may have been how they constantly switched narratives from character to character and never let you choose your own party, but in the end I always felt like Final Fantasy XIII acted much like this quote from one of the Metal Gear Solid IV Unskippable Episodes:
"Wow, [Hideo Kojima] is really afraid that giving you some actual gameplay would ruin his movie."

And I'd be willing to bet that Fang would be the only character aside from Sazh that I liked in the game, had I the strength to resume playing.

*For the record, I absolutely loved Final Fantasy XII. My PS2 memory card has a save with over 110 hours logged in that game, and I still haven't killed the final two super-bosses.

I find a lot of people ***** about Square Enix because they think hating on JRPGs the "cool thing" to do. And Squeenix is the most well-known of the JRPG developers out there. Obviously, there are some people who legitimately dislike them, whether they don't like their storylines, or their gameplay styles, or what have you. But I find my usual conversation about 'em goes like this:

Me: -makes some vague mention of liking a Squeenix game-
Other Person: Ugh! I hate Square Enix!
Me: Hm? Why? I like a lot of their games, actually.
Other: They suck!
Me: Why do you say that?
Other: ...They just do!
Me: -facepalm-

i can't stand square because of the lack of a decent story with decent characters and instead shows off flashy cgi cut-scenes. also on a more personal note, i REALLY dislike their stereotypical anime art style that just make you wonder why people would build something so stupid or dress so retarded, the style has little to no logic and serves to look cool. Most of what i'm talking about comes from the final fantasy series by the way.

To be honest I havent heard many people ***** about square enix at all maybe im in the minority here.

I have heard quite a lot of bitching about how enix ruined squaresoft with the merger and going on to say since then have not produced any decent games (which I would say is untrue).

So I dont know but they are now a huge company and of course usually the bigger you get the more detached the people at the top and bottom are its all about the money which always pisses fans off (quite rightly imo) look at the bitching towards EA or Activision Blizzard. People at the top say release FFXIV its released even if it isnt ready, just to keep the shareholders happy who probably dont give a crap about the company so much as they can make money out of it.

Im not saying this is exclusive to Square enix though, people probably just ***** because they dont think a decent Final Fantasy has been released since no#X or before. (yeah im just speculating)

All I'm going to say is that FF's after 6 are almost without exception awful.

Now, I don't hate JRPGs. It has so much potential as a genre, but it's being squandered.

I can't tell whether you are trolling or not -_-

People give legitimate reasons all the time for not liking games. No offense, but you are hardly giving ANY reasons as to what makes a Squeenix game good. Yet, you are still getting upset over people who are giving reasons as to why they think Squeenix makes bad games just because you don't agree with their reasons?

I smell fanboy...

Oh, ugh. Come on. I cringe every time someone says this.

Please don't insult people's intelligence like that.
But it's true. I have a friend who admits that the only reason he never played a JRPG is because Yahtzee dislikes them. You may not like it, but it happens.

The only thing that irritates me is when Human Revolution is brushed off because of their involvement.

They really seem to be hands-off, and after E3 they seem to have realised their absolute best studios are now outside of Japan, so I can't imagine them fucking with them too much.
