Lately I have been thinking of what defines whether or not something is Art. I am referring to the perception of art; not whether or not the art is good. Such as many films are considered art, yet others aren't. For some reason that doesn't work for me, as I feel art is to convey a message or feeling, be it inspiration or arousal. Thinking of it this way makes me think Life is art.

It's kind of a subjective deal really, I, for instance, don't think a neat pile of bricks is art, but I saw it in the Tate Modern, so apparently someone disagrees with me. Even Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art]can't work out what art is, so I doubt a concrete definition is going to come along any time soon.

On an unrelated note, it says you've been a member for a few months, but this is your first post, so welcome to the escapist!

I think art is relative to the individual.

What one person thinks is art may not seem like art to someone else.

To me, this:

is art, and so is this (The actual film, of course):

and this:

To me, art can take any shape or form, and it all depends on what you, as an individual, perceive it as. It's all subjective, in my opinion.

Art is "creative expression" so where the real confusion comes out is what people feel is creative because that is subjective.

Literally anything can be considered a piece of art, but most people will only call something 'Art' if they find it really impressive. For example, here is some ascii art:

Some people here will probably hate that and would just call it a picture, and that's ok as I'd probably hate at least one thing they like.

I think many things are Art but it's the artistic value of said art that is what people debate. Or at least that's how I see it, I may be barking up the wrong tree in the wrong park.

An art thread, I love these.
Of course art is subjective, what may be art in my eyes, may not be in someone else's. There are many artist who choose to push this definition to the extreme. First one that comes to my mind is Marcel Duchamp, who took a urinal, signed it "R.Mutt", titled it "Fountain" and called it art. Second would be Mark Rothko, who likes to paint rectangles.

My four year old nephew could probably make it, is it art? The answer is entirely up to you.

-------------
In my personal opinion, what I would classify as art needs to have some form of effort behind it, I dislike a piece if it looks like it took no time at all, that being said, I don't actually know if some of these artist spent a lot of effort on their work, maybe Rothko stared at a blank canvas for hours, got angry, ripped the painting up, started over half a million times trying to get these rectangles just right, Or maybe he just thought to himself "Hey I wanna paint rectangles and see how people react." The world may never know.

Artistic intent by its creator. Art created primarily as aesthetic expression or exploration is generally considered fine art.
