start off with the C&C series but play them on the PC then the original Starcraft and Warcrafts
that should get you started off.

But do me one favour don't buy SC2 yet wait till Blizzard release the other 2 expansions for it.
This. If you're feeling up for a much larger challenge after that, go try out Europa Universalis 3. If you're still feeling for more strategy, hit up Hearts of Iron 3.
What these guys said.

C&C is easier to get into at first, but ultimately you want Starcraft and later Grand Strategy games like EU, if you feel like they're your kind of thing.

StarCraft is excellent, but picking up the multiplayer right now will just make you want to hate it because you'll get destroyed. Only the good players are left at this point. The single-player campaign is really well-designed though you should give it a shot.

Empire Earth is a great RTS, just please for the love of god stay away from the sequels...
Age of Empires 2 and 3, Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 and Warcraft 3 are also some games you should consider. Fairly old, cheap and are pretty good overall.

My first RTS is "World In Conflict"

It's very fun.
Is that the one with 3 races, one of which is only giant robots?
nah, completely different. It's a WW3 scenario between the US and Russia.

Are you saying stay away from Starcraft because it would be hard for a newbie or because you don't like it?

IMO:
If he's trying to prepare himself for the much hyped Starcraft 2 then what better way to introduce him to SC2 mechanics by playing SC1?

Why? I've heard from many of my friends that Starcraft is amazing, and not that hard to get into.
Depends on what you intend to do. It's practically impossible to start playing online once you've grabbed the basics, because people (even those who considers themselves noobs) will trample you. But it's an interesting story and a good game if you keep to single player, and possibly play against your friends :p

So with the upcoming release of Starcraft 2, and such unbelievably good things being said about the genre, I've become interested in Real-Time Strategy games. The only thing is, I've never actually played a real one.

The only one I tried was Command & Conquer 3 for the Xbox 360, which I couldn't stand. The controls just weren't fast enough, and it just didn't end up being fun in the least.

Anyway. I want to ask y'all on The Escapist, what RTS game would you recommend to a complete newbie to the series?

EDIT: I mean on PC. Definitely not on consoles, I found out firsthand that they just don't work.
Hiyaarr, im a hardcore RTS player myself, and probably the simplest are the origional Dawn of War series [i reccommend picking up Dark Crusade]. As well as being easy to grasp, their fantastic games.

Another little RTS gem is Lord Of The Rings Battle For Middle Earth II'. The graphics on that are superb...and cmon, its lord of the rings! haha.

Ill reccommend you one more; the Star Wars RTS was pretty good! [the land battles were very mediocre from what i remember but the space battles were really good fun online].

I cant stress enough how good these games are, and their extremely easy to grasp. Hope i helped man, and happy RTSing:D

I am a very big RTS fan and to get the most out of them, the PC is the way to go.

As far as recommendations go I'd say the original Dawn of War, Red Alert 3 (its just FUN), Rome: Total War or Age of Empires 2/3 (Old school!).

Until you're a bit more used to the style of gameplay, I'd stay away from Supreme Commander or Company of Heros. Have fun!

I like Starcraft, but I don't think it's the right game for introducing a nooby.

The first RTS I ever played was Warcraft 2. When Starcraft first came out it was the second game I played. It's not really all that complex, it's only when you want to be Gosu and get really really good at RTS that he should stay away initially. I'm assuming the OP is a casual RTS player at this stage.

It was my first game back when I was about 10 and got me into the whole genre. That and Age of Empires.

For those complaining about the SC2 multiplayer, a general rule for any game is to finish the campaign first so that you get a through insight into the game's mechanics and then go into multiplayer. Sure the tactics will be different but at least you will have tactics to use. OT, by the time most people have finished the campaign the multiplayer matchmaking system would have been properly set up and balanced with enough players in each catagory, making the experience (hopefully) more enjoyable.

I started with Civilisation Revolution, and I'd never played an RTS before.
It definitely piqued my interested, I recommend giving that a shot.
Not technically an RTS.

OT:
Your best be my friend is to try Age of empires or Age of mythology, they're deep but easy to get into.
Plus if you go online your not likely to get OMFWTFBBQ'd by a korean as you would with say starcraft.

I recommend Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 for the PC probably the most fun I've ever had playing an RTS, although getting a copy these days is no picnic...

For an easy RTS to start with, go with any Command and Conquer game BEFORE C&C3. I especially recommend Red Alert 2 and the expansion Yuri's Revenge. Their easy to pick-up, but mastering them may be a bit harder. an easy one to master would probably be Generals and Zero:Hour. Once you learn the to play these, other like Warcraft and Cossacks will come easily, although they are a bit more complex.

However, I recommend that you play these ONLY on a COMPUTER. Unless it's Command and Conquer on the N64, RTS games usually don't do well on consoles, which is probably why you had a hard time in C&C3 on the 360.

AI War: Fleet Command is very friendly to newbies, but still is very challenging for RTS veterans. It all depends on the difficulty level. The game is also pretty cheap for it's play value.

Another thing in AI war is that it's designed for a minimum of micromanagement.
A lot of RTS games require huge amounts of micromanagement and also (this I hate) resource management. So many RTS games are almost real time resource manager games because what a lot of the strategy boils down to is building the right things at the right time and then micromanaging a few units. In AI War, you are commanding hundreds of units that have intelligent targeting (The usually try to target the enemy they can do the most damage to) but you can set them to target other things. Micromanagement isn't required, often you give your units a few objectives when taking a planet, then when those are gone it's a matter of setting your force to Free-Roaming-Defender mode and watch them clean up.
