The LoTR RTS games. Very good, and changing the difficulty can make it anything from a leisurely stroll to a "SWEET JESUS DEVELOP MORE CAVALRY PUT THE ARCHERS ON THE WALL CHRIST I'M DYING AAAAAGH"

For ease, I think a dead ferret could play Warcraft 3. I personally started with Age of Empires and Starwars Battlegrounds, both pretty simple. Get reasources, build troops, research. No complicated mechanics, and they're gunna be dirt cheap now.

World in conflict is a good choice.

It follows a rock paper scissors method and the campaign can ease you in.

You can't set the difficulty of the skirmish AI, which is Starcraft's one flaw, in my eyes. Don't bother with the skirmish, just give copies to your friends and have Hamachi battles, and play the campaign while they're setting up ;)

Although, I agree it might be hard to get into until you can fully get your head around all the units and buildings, and their advantages. I guess I'm a bit too used to it to make a good decision for a newbie o_O
Riiight, now I remember. You also can't team up with the AI as far as I remember. Doing that was my favourite strategy up until I found out friends in MP are pretty much useless and in SP they are either more useless or too useful.

I think you can team up with AIs if you make a server that no-one joins and do a 2v2 where all the slots besides you are AI.

Seems like you own a 360.
In this case: halo wars. It's clearly designed for rts beginners.

Try any of the Red Alert or Command and Conquer series or even the Age of Empires games on the PC. While I am primarily a consoler, I know that the RTS genre really works best on the PC because it seems like the two were just made for each other, a literal match made in heaven. The games and series' that I have mentioned are excellent and should help ease you into RTS waters.

Pikmin, it doesn't use same controls as other RTS' its like hybrid of a third person explorer and a console rts, just check it out if your curious but not if your looking to train yourself for PC RTS

Wow, thanks for the great response, guys!

Anyway. I'm amazed at all the contradiction in this thread, some people saying "Starcraft's campaign can ease you in very well", while others are all "STAY AWAY FROM STARCRAFT until you understand how RTSs work!", etc etc.

And I'm not getting ready for Starcraft 2. It's just the release of it is getting me interested, to see what all the hype is about the RTS genre.

And for the last time, I'm not interested in console RTSs in the least. Please stick with PC ones.
